changing front and rear speakers

i've had it with the philip stock speakers, so gonna change them soon..

thinking of boston acoustic 4" coaxial speakers for the front (dun like to mount tweeters) and a pair of coaxial speakers for the rear (they look like 6.5"?)..

will keep the stock subs since bass is not dat important to me..

can the ice gurus advise if this setup work without an amp?

thanx in advance. :D

Re: changing front and rear speakers

it is not hard to imagine anything worse than phillips stock speakers :)

co-axials may be suitable but u may need to check the depth for mounting for the front door.

as for whether changing speakers are enough, perhaps an analogy to illustrate;
a car (music system) is only as powerful as its engine (HU, amplifiers etc.) which then get converted to speed via the wheels (speakers)....

similarly, music can only improve in clarity and power if it is adequately powered. hence i would really recommend powering the co-axials with an amplifier....

i think the stock hu, speakers and "subs" are really not close to the standards of average. some change is needed to make listening to music in this well insulated vehicle a pleasurable experience.

have fun!

krkrkr.. thanx..

i went down to audioedge looking for 4" coaxial focal speakers.

the guys there recommended diamond components, but they managed to integrate the tweeter and crossover into the 4" speaker..

pretty good result.. good enuf for me to listen to george winston liao.. :D

How long did the job take and roughly how much did they charge?

On a scale of 1 to 10 and say the stock speakers are a 1, where on the scale do you think the upgrade has put you?

Thanks

Re: changing front and rear speakers

hi, it took about 1 hour to replace the speakers..

compared to the stock i would say moved from 1 to 7..

but bear in mind i dun go for bass, just needed clear midrange and vocals without amp..

if u dun mind mounting the tweeters, can go for 4" cdt or focal components..

cost was 250 including installation for changing the 2 front stock speakers.

hope this helps.

Re: changing front and rear speakers

the most common perception is that bass makes the car go boom boom boom... like an ah beng who drives a civic window down, and blue neon lights underneath...

actually sub-bass is a CRUCIAL element in enjoying the music, regardless the genre... when u use a coaxial in front, u are also missing out midbass... now add that to sub-bass also missing, you are not gonna enjoy it too much.

if u guys are not intending to spend alot... u don't have to...but can still get a decent whole spectrum of frequencies (or almost)... it could be a better long term solution, because there is a risk of spending a couple of hundreds , get bor ed, then spend again... may end up more expensive

1HdLight.... tell me about it man.... I started out with just wanting a speaker upgrade... initial setup was Infinity Speakers, two amps, stock headunit and two 10" Subs.... Two years down the road, underwent a revamp with Alpine Hdunit, Focal K2Ps, Audison Lrxs and cables and blah and blah and blah... If I had taken into account of what I had spent in totality... I would have a real kick ass system by now...

So guys... in IMHO... do your homework carefully.... you will save some moolahs.... cheers

oneHeadlight..what is the better solution u said in your post?
how to get almost a whole spectrum of frequencies without spending too much?

Re: changing front and rear speakers

u need to have a subwoofer... a midbass and/or a mid, and tweets.
i wouldnt go for co-axials.
and u need amps definitely.

don't go for high end ones....get used stuff from upgraders...

Re: changing front and rear speakers

how much would u think one need to spend, assuming they buy staff from upgrader, before they can get a decent set you mentioned?

Re: changing front and rear speakers

i wud put it in another way.... decide how much u wanna spend in TOTAL on ice.
as FiftyFive and many others would testify, most people thought they wud be happy with very small upgrade.. but ended up spending more than wat they expected.

there is a minimum u need to spend to be honest...and i wud put it as a reasonable $1.5 to $2k that wud please most non audiphiles , and should be good enough. Its ok getting used stuff, from reliable sources.
