Composite drop-in air scoops

DROP-IN Air Scoop solution for 1 Series (E82) and 3 Series (E90)

Recently I have dropped in an air scoop which a close friend of mind had for his 125i which he had developed for his own use about 2 years ago. Wasn't very convinced that it is going to work.... but took the interst to try it on my brand new ride (Yr 2010 318i). This is quite a big step as I don't usually even open my bonnet, I thought that is only for the mechanics.... :)

It wasn't a perfect fit but somehow we managed to install it on, most importantly without any modification to my brand new ride. We went for a drive, to my pleasant surprise, the ride became more lively and it reduces the feeling of laggyness and draggyness. The only set back then was that it was not a scoop tailored-made for the 3 series. (ie 318, 320, 325....) E90 model.

When my friend knows that it is also working on my ride he offered to make one for my ride. After serveral trials, he has successfully developed the composite drop-in air scoop for the E90 and there is no modification required with just a simpy drop-in, the time taken to install is just 10mins.! The perfectly fitted scoops are efficient and the lag/drag was futher reduced from his initial trial piece. Personally I love his design not only because there is no modification, but his considerations to fine details i.e. minimum or no blocking of radiator air flow, the scoop is tough, slim, well fit and light weight, it will not become a piece of extra that smash into your radiator if you have a minor contact at the front.

So now my friend has got the Drop-In Air Scoop availble for both the 1 Series as well as the 3 Series. Hope this is good news for those who have been looking for such a solution.

I am now enjoying my ride, which is used to be hesitant and draggy :)

Re: Composite drop-in air scoops

This might be an old news!

But Bro.. how is it different from those we have seen here in past posts? Might be a good thing to have more options for us..

do not know much about the other scoops in this forum......... all i know is that the scoops i have are made of composites........ and is a simple hassle-free drop-in type with no requirements for boltings etc........ :)

Re: Composite drop-in air scoops

The ones made by R2D is drop-in. Really don't know what point you are making. If you had read through R2D's thread you'll know what I mean.

Re: Composite drop-in air scoops

not making any particlar pointers here....... the ones i have are made of composites......... sharing with fellow bros here......... are the ones you'd mentioned made of composites although all share the same function?

Composites are important for their strength and light weight. Since the scoops are really small and aren't subject to much stress, why is it important that it's made of composites?

Re: Composite drop-in air scoops

wats the advantages/disadvatages between composite scoops & non composites considering weight issues are negligible?

Re: Composite drop-in air scoops

just here to say that i have a pair of drop-in scoops which are made of composites thats all...... did not mention anything about the neccesity of composite strength to withstand any kind of external loads.......

appears to imply that the main unique selling point of these scoops is that they're composite. So they must have some kind of advantage over non-composite scoops no? I know many bros here would jump at the chance to install them if the advantages are big. :D

Thanks Mock. This is the question I have been trying to get across.

Re: Composite drop-in air scoops

IMO, the composite scoop do not have any weight or strength advantage.!

However, it can be more cost effective..... there is no MOQ.. there is no issue with stock and it can be fabircated upon order... or with varing designs to suit idividual liking :)

More option for anyone who is looking for such air scoops...

Re: Composite drop-in air scoops

More than a year ago, R2D has already been doing this, no MOQ, no issue with stock and can be fabricated upon order, or with varying designs to suit individual liking and for different cars.........

Think this is useful for those bros who don't have scoops ready made for them.. like those with E36, and IIRC the E89 also. I know R2D has for E46 and E90, not sure about E60.

As I understand it the E60 takes air from the side instead of from the front grilles.. so not sure how a scoop would work for something like that.

Re: Composite drop-in air scoops

After 2 pages and 12 replies, I still don't know what this composite scoop looks like (what its made of) and still don't know the advantages over what is presently available in the market; from R2D, Bimshop and of course imported.

Post pictures please.

Straw and mud! One of the oldest and most dependable composites. :D
