Coolant Light Came On

Hey guys,

Is it normal for the coolant light to come on throughout the life of a BMW? How often does the coolant need topping up?

Mine (coolant light) just came on just now, it went off after driving around and restarting the engine. Could it be the liquid's expansion that made the light go off?

Haven't got the chance to check the coolant level since I don't want to scald myself  I will do that first thing in the morning thou, once the engine has cooled

Re: Coolant Light Came On

Better to have a check yourself..... Mine jus came on last week with 16,000km mileage and less than a year owning the car.
My 1st thought was it may due to cool start or expansion in the tank and furthermore i hav jus gotten my 1st service wif PML. But after a visual check the tank really show below minimum level.... top up about 500ml of water n move on....... my question is PML dun do such check on their service checklist?? or is it there is some leak in the tank or hose?? i hav no idea but to monitor... if the light come back then got to sent car in to the most sian place....

Re: Coolant Light Came On

Hi,

Thanks guys for the replies. My milage now is about 20K KM. Just hit one year old. And i have just recently topped up the coolant with some water... Will drive awhile more and check the level again. So i don't think it's normal for the coolant to be deprived of liquids at this point of time ya?

Thanks

Re: Coolant Light Came On

Try to top it up with water..... if problem persists, then it may be a leak somewhere. If so, be prepared to fork out 1500 - 2000SGD to resolve it.

This kind of problem is quite common in BMWs ...leaks at various joints carrying the water/ coolants , o-rings/ water rubber hoses hardened under our hot climates etc etc.

Gd idea to wait till the engine cools b4 u check, safety 1st :)

Actually, 1 factor to consider is when was the last time u topped up the coolant/water?

Best thing to do at this point is top up water when the engine is cool and see if the light comes on again. If it recurrs ever so often, go get it checked. Also, you may wanna do a visual check and see if there's anything leaking in the engine bay/undercarriage.

My coolant warning came on at cold start abt 2 mths ago and i topped up 500ml of water and the warning has not come on again since *fingers crossed*

Hope this helps!

After you have top up water, do keep at least a litre of water in your boot in case (touchwood) you need it again. Lookout for coolant stains. When mine leaked i could see the engine under cover flooded. The leakage got worst when im stuck in a jam. My mechanic found the leak at the y-joint just above the engine block. Can even see a mini fountain shooting coolant. :)

That's why it's advisable to have water bottles in the car - for the passengers/ drivers and the CAR ! hahahah.

If your leaked radiator isn't that bad, you may still be able to drive to the worksop and I advise you to get it checked quickly.

tap water will do if it's just top-up, not necessarily that you must add the coolant.

I tot tap water will cause the radiator's fins to get rusty??? My old mechanic always advise me to use coolant/distilled water :)

Distilled water is always preferred as they are impurities in tap water that can cause corrosion in the radiator over time.

But sometimes, when you need an urgent top up, bo pianz :)

Re: Coolant Light Came On

My "Coolant low" light appeared yesterday... and found out that there is water & water mark outside the reservoir tank.. need to top-up water 50-150ml for every trip

What is the possible problem? (water pump? radiator? etc)
Can it be leaking from the reservoir tank?

I just changed coolant during my last servicing about a month ago

I had the same issue too, but got the car checked n found that the water hose was leaking. Had it changed n so far so good :)

There's a slow leak somewhere. The leak will get bigger and bigger. Suggest you drive to a workshop and get it checked. The mechanic should be able to do a pressure test. If the leak comes from the water pump you can see it when you hoist the car up.

I suspect as what bro Satruz mentioned is the hose... I suspect is the hose that lead to the water tank, the portion is leaking.. that cos the water dipping onto the water tank.
I will send in my car for a check ASAP
