Coolant Light Came On

I suspect as what bro Satruz mentioned is the hose... I suspect is the hose that lead to the water tank, the portion is leaking.. that cos the water dipping onto the water tank.
I will send in my car for a check ASAP

Meanwhile keep a few bottles of Watson distilled water in your boot. :)

My "Coolant low" light appeared yesterday... and found out that there is water & water mark outside the reservoir tank.. need to top-up water 50-150ml for every trip

What is the possible problem? (water pump? radiator? etc)
Can it be leaking from the reservoir tank?

I just changed coolant during my last servicing about a month ago
Bro,

it continously goes down? and you have to top up every now and then? how often u have do it? Just asking as mine lights came on about 2 weeks back....and it was like 5 months after my service was done and where the hoses were changed.....still monitoring it.....level seems okie.

Regards.

Ya, as long as I drive, the level will go down, and to be safe, I need to top-up every trip.
Hopefully is just the hose, now I just try to tahan till this Sat morning then go workshop so I don't have to take my annual leave during weekdays.

Actually is nothing to do when was the last time we do servicing.. if the thing going to give way.. anytime it will happen. This is just parts & parcel of wear & tear.

Thanks,

Just wanted to check as during my servicing the leakage from the hose was discovered and the hoses were replaced and coolant was changed. Was wondering as light came after about 5 months from last coolant change (and new hoses). Wanted to gauge how often/regular must the coolant level be checked and top up is needed.

Re: Coolant Light Came On

Today after I reached my destination, I opened my bonnet to check any sign of leakage while the engine is still hot... To my surprise, I saw the coolant is leaking from the "+ sign" plastic screw located on top just beside the water tank cap & the the hose connection. Does that mean need to replace the whole tank or just replace the faulty screw??

Re: Coolant Light Came On

I think that + sign is sealed/fused into the tank one. I remember seeing that. I think you may need to replace the tank, but I am not an expert and cannot confirm. Ask your friendly service agent :p

yes bro, there is something seriously wrong , nobody top up coolant for every trip, One tank of coolant can last really long unless you want to flush them and get it changed after 50k for performance sake. Coolant dries up for couple of reasons, hose or tank leakage or waterpump not working causing engine heat to rise and evaporate the coolant faster....update us the result after u sent it to the workshop.

Heh Guys, just an update..
So finally this morning went to workshop. Yeah, is the small plastic screw (+) which had to be replaced.. the workshop also replenished back some coolant which had lost when I top-up using distilled water for the past couple of days.. & ask me to monitor for a few days.
Is a small cost I paid for top-up of coolant.. And they said is not uncommon the plastic screw will give way for our car

Cool the + screw is replaceable? LEarnt something new. It looks fused into the tank to me.

I just came to know if we unscrew the + screw, the hole actually act as an "alternate outlet" to release excessive coolant/water if we continue top-up of coolant/water into the water tank till full..

Coolant overflow/leak

BMW320i, E46, 2004:Coolant leak problem.
The thermostat, coolant bottle and the hoses were replaced.
No leak observed in the system when pressure tested and also when the engine is on.
Obsrved leak on the neck of the bottle in the morning.
Is theer a overflow/pressure releaf valve in this system?
Can not see any overflow pipe like other cars.
The engine temp. is normal.
Is this a leak or overflow as per the BMW design?

That little "+" screw is a bleed valve to let air out of youe coolant system when there is major work done to the car. On the 4cyl cars, there are 2 screws, 1 on the tank and another on the oil cooler. The bleeding occurs through a long plastic hose that goes to the top of the radiator on the passenger side.

On BMWs the plastics are not very hardy. When new, the plastics are black. With age, heat and pressures, the plastics start to turn brown and brittle. That is the first sign of the impending leaks in the cooling system.

For 90's the common leaks are as follows:
1. Water pump to cylinder head hose
2. Flange seal at the back of cylinder head
3. Radiator (just below the hot hose)
4. Bleed pipe above the radiator
5. Radiator top hose
6. Cylinder head coolant outlet flange

not so common are:
1. ATF Cooler hoses
2. Radiator Outlet sensor
3. Cabin heater hoses
4. Water pump

hope this is useful.

can even be the radiator cap.

Can you see 2x O rings plus 1 more seal inside the cap?

sometimes, the cap becomes brittle and the outermost O ring drops into the expansion tank cos the plastics on the cap breaks off.
