Do E46 need warm up every morning?

Hi, fire up the engine every morning and the car rev slightly higher...does it need to warm up before moving off?

Also, after a hard drive, do you switch off the ignition immediately when stop or you let the car's engine run for awhile?

Lastly, anyone uses shell helix ultra engine oil?

Need comments...Thank you very much.

I don think so as I just drive off every morning when it starts..

Thanks Ken, seen the 1st 2 thread. As for the last thread, something new to me. You mean a very cold start will affect the transmission?
Please shed some light...
Also, how about killing the engine off immediately after a hard drive...any comments?
Thanks.....!

I am pretty sure there are nothing negative doing so.....

There is no need to warm up, just drive off but don't race the engine for at least 1km and when needle goes to centreline.

cool down is good for turbo cars, just to get some heat out of the turbo, NA no need

There are no hard and fast rules with this issue. Treat the car as you would your own body. Treat it well, it'll perform well and last longer. But if you're one who changes rides like undies then it's no point fussing about this.

i read up the E46 owners manual again... see page 56 (Starting the engine)...

"Do not allow the engine to warm up at a standstill, but drive off as soon as possible, using moderate engine speeds."

Re: Do E46 need warm up every morning?

I read somewhere before.... i was not able to find that article now, but i remeber what it says. Since i can't proof it, you are free to take it with a pinch of salt.

The main wear and tear of the engine in the morning start up is not because there is not enough oil in the engine, or not because the oil hasn't gotten round to all the parts in the engine.

When petrol combust, the by product is carbon. Carbon mixed with water in a cold engine, forms various forms of carbonic acid. The purpose of the engine oil, besides lubricating the engine is to quickly go round and pick up the carbon particulars before it has a change to form acid.

Hence, it is recommended that you drive your car straight away....

HI, i usually warm up for abt 20sec, then drive down the multi story carpark on idling speed to warm it down. i park normally at the 4th story, will be just nice when i reach the ground, not the optimum temp, but not cold. :)

Re: Do E46 need warm up every morning?

That all sounds good, accept for the idling after starting your engine cold. All of the oil is in the crankcase, and not fully flowing through the engine when you first start, so the best method (and recommended by BMW and Audi) is to start driving immediately, and just take it easy. The oil will distribute much faster to all moving parts of the engine, thus reducing initial friction and wear.

Unless u have a turbocharger, killing off the engine immediately should not be a problem i guess.

Prevent carbon build up?
