Hi all,

Was having rattling sound when driving over uneven surfaces.

Initially thought it would be the worn bushes but PML found out it's 'hattrack'. I think that's the spelling....

I have been searching for the information here and online but can't find it. Can anyone tell what's that, and what's for?:uhhh:

Thank!

Re: Does anyone knows what a 'Hattrack' is?

"Hattrack".... never heard of this... unless the SA is talking about "Track Control Arm" which primarily used to control lateral movement of the wheel. Oh well...:thinking::thinking:

Re: Does anyone knows what a 'Hattrack' is?

I'd thought the top hat, or any of the suspension parts but it seems not. Anway, wasnt clear when the SA told me over the phone about the 'hattrack'

Track Control Arm? Thought the strut bar does the job, contorlling the lateral wheel movement?

Overhaul, no lar.....I hope :)

Where else or any books / information I can get before going back and ask the SA? Very interetsed to know the inside/out of the car :p

Will keep you guys know what's it after I find out from SA.

Cheers

Negative. Controlling the lateral wheel movement is the job of the Track Control Arm.

To be specific, Strut Bars or Strut Brace's functions are = for bracing the chassis between the tops of the struts where they mount to the body, a strut brace reduces the amount of flex that a vehicle experiences during cornering (Quote/unquote)

Yups will wait to hear what WTH is HatTrack

Re: Does anyone knows what a 'Hattrack' is?

eh from my limited understanding. a hatrack is the mounting point of the rear seatbelts. probably a damaged clamp at the mounting point under ur rear seat. shld b cheap to fix

Re: Does anyone knows what a 'Hattrack' is?

Hi, just checked the message. PMed you :)

Anyway, the rattling sound does not seem to be originates/radiates from some plastic objects. It sounds metallic...and thats what really bug me before the retification.

But the sound has return recently but this time rather minimal. Maybe I am just over sensitive about strange noise coming out from the quiet interior. :p

Like most of you I am still learning and loving my ride more and more each day.
Will keep you guys informed after I have asked the specific SA on this matter.

Re: Does anyone knows what a 'Hattrack' is?

I had similar rattling sounds also metal to metal contact. Turned out that it was the exhaust. I had reversed into a tree root and caused one of the pins connected to a rubber damper coming out of place an thus keep knocking onto other metal parts.

Re: Does anyone knows what a 'Hattrack' is?

for mine less fortunate i have a plastic knocking sound. replaced absorber mountings, rear stoppers, rear upper arms, exhausts, and still not solved.. this is frustrating... :(

Re: Does anyone knows what a 'Hattrack' is?

Hattrack is actually the panel that is behind your rear seat headrests that is connected to your "C"' Pillars and your rear windscreen... It's the big piece of panel that you can see right from outside the vehicle. Purpose of hattrack is cosmetic and for sound insulation. Without the Hattrack you will only your bare chasis, your rear seat belt mountings, screws, speakers.

Some cars face this issue of rattling noise when going over uneven surfaces. The Hattrack rattles against the windscreen catch and the c pillars. What you can do is to remove the hattrack and insulate all the contact points especially at the windscreen and the c pillar areas:))

yup. potential problem area also is fhe mounting joint of e rear seatbelt at the hatrack area. theres a clamp there thats v susceptible to wear n tear

Re: Does anyone knows what a 'Hattrack' is?

Wow, thanks guys for the inputs! Appreciate it very very much!! :) It is rather strange I cannot find such name on both forum and google. Wonder whats the actual name for it?

So, based on your clear explaination the metallic rattling sound is not caused by hattrack. Hattrack is making the creaking (tak tak)sound which I used to think is coming from the rear leather seats. Now, it makes sense to me as whenever I drive under a hot sun or driving off the car early in the morning I get that creaking or cracking sound! Good news is sometimes the creaking sound returns but not as bad as before PML sorted out the problem for me.

However, the rattling metallic sound is still a mystery to me. Correct me if I am wrong, I dont think the rattling metallic sound is caused by hattrack as it is plastic? or maybe some parts beneath the hat track has got some metals which gives out the rattling sound?

My guess is both these plasticky and metallic sounds are from the same source?? Meanwhile, I managed to find something that may help others on this rattling sound from the C-pillar. Removing inside C pillar trim??? - BMW M3 Forum (E90 E92)

Re: Does anyone knows what a 'Hattrack' is?

Have encountered metallic clicking noise from the hattrack area before, but not rubbing against anything. After much effort found noise was from the seat belt rollers that are mounted on the hattrack. Maybe you should remove the hattrack and go for a test drive with someone to help isolate the noise. :)

Re: Does anyone knows what a 'Hattrack' is?

Hello everyone,
Finally, after chatting with the customer service advisors I have clear information how this was resolved.
It was a progressive procedure to check/isolate the noise.
They had to remove rear seat, head rest, trim sections and panel to isolate the noise. Then they applied felt tapes on the C-pillar holders.
I am very pleased to have a much improved (not eradicated totally, wish it can be) sound/noise isolation when I first collected the car back then.
A good job done on my ride. Really appreciate it.
