Does buying replica rims negatively impact warranty claims?

thinking of getting a new sets of rims but heard that in instance of warranty claims involving areas related to the wheel, pml may claim that the problems are caused by the non-BMW rims.

just wanted to hear if anybody had such experiences.

also, i've been reading and i know the advice is to go for originals over replicas, but i find paying 6k+ for a set of 19" rims and tyres quite expensive, considering the omw of the car to be only 40-50k+ (5 series). what are the brands that are value for money?

just gotta be sure that your size of rims are recommended for use on bimmers as any size too large might potentially cause damage. the techs at bmw will probably be able to ascertain this and as such void your warranty on the damage parts or areas. otherwise you shld be fine replica or not.

This question have been asked many many times...IMO Actually key concern is not about warranty but about the quality/safety of the replicas.

There are thousands of BMWs out there with aftermarket rims (both Branded & Replicas)... if PML void warranty because of that, then most of the guys here will have their warranty void already.

So far all my rides, I've been on Taiwan made aftermarket rims as well as branded German aftermarket rims, in my own experience I've not or heard anything about warranty void cos of aftermarket rims, be it look alike aftermarket or $6K branded types.

Besides brakes, the only other things your cars rely on, is the wheels and the tyres. These are the only contact points between you, your passengers, your car and the asphalt. And these are the mods one should not save money on...... cause you never know when you will need the safety aspects......

Yesterday I hit a big hole on the road along Henderson. I think if my wheels were replicas, I'd be looking for new ones today.

what are your replicas made of? If it is cast shld still be fine. dunno whats wrong with stinkapore roads lately. so many bumps and pot holes. when i drive i am literally dodging land mines!

Mine are the original ones that came with the car. Replicas would have broken

The primary reason why replicas are not strongly not recommended here is because of the safety aspects.

Agree with Kenntona.. it's not worth to compromise your UDM with replica items... we wouldn't know or can guarantee the reliability of your rims if they failed catastrophically.

Same thing goes with replica brake calipers, pads etc.. Will they stop? sure.. up to what limit? not sure..

depends on what the replicas are made of as well. some of them are pretty strong and sturdy. Do you want reps that resemble the OEM rims?

Cast rims are pretty much strong. it should not be much of a problem going over bumps or small potholes.

agree to wat Ken n Silver says, dun compromise on tyres and brakes. replica brakes callipers are a NO NO !!

can someone define replica rims? a design copy of a famous rim, or a rim made in taiwan/china?

technically the word 'replica' means a design copy.

so what if a famous established brand does a copy of say, a BBS RSR, or the CSL? which is very common, does it make it a replica then?

a lot of rims are made in taiwan/china factories now right? cheap labour, etc.
perhaps the rim says Made in USA, means assembled in USA, but who makes the dish, spokes?

Are NEEZ and Volks using the same 8000ton forging machine in the same factory?

I see most replica from japan has JWL and VIA stamped on the wheel. This certifies the wheel performed within a set of requirements. However, if the dealer could not produce certificate or document to proof then be careful . Not sure what are the requirement standard for cast or forged wheel in Europe , US or even Taiwan or Thailand ?

I think some European names have TUV certification (TUV is under the German Technical Inspection Authority). For American wheels, there is DOT certification (Department of Transportation). HRE has TUV certification and DPE has DOT certification. In other cases, if your wheels are forged, there should be certification of usage of T6-6061 aluminium by the factory. Not so sure for other reps.

Another common certification is JWL which is frequently seen on replica wheels too. Bit of history :

In 1971 SSR released the first 3 piece wheel, the MK1. Aluminum wheels were in high demand and resulted in the creation of JWL (Japan Light Alloy Wheel) Certification in 1973. The Japanese Government incorporates this certification on aluminum wheels to improve quality and safety. JWL certification involves testing impact strength and endurance strength. In 1981, a 3rd party statutory board the VIA (Vehicle Inspection Association) was created to verify JWL testing. Both the JWL and VIA logo are embossed into each and every SSR wheel representing dedication to quality control. Can any kind soul here advise me if such JWL or other certification on OZ ultrlaggera 18" Rims?
Was contemplating to get 1 for my E90.
