Hi Guys

First time here and asking questions allready! I have been trying to locate service and adjustment details for the 6 throttle bodies on my M3. I have found many sites that deal with the US version, very much different and not hand built. German sites are beyond my linguistic abillity!

Can anybody provide me with any factory service details?????

PS

I am a member of the Western Australian BMW owners club, We have club outings at least once a month and we have over a hundred cars represented, ranging from 2002, 850, all series past and present, M cars, Alpina, Harmon and the likes.

Hi Robzoe, welcome to BMW-SG. I'm afraid the E36 M3 Euro was absent in our car population and if there are any, they have remain hidden somehow :) I may have some info tuck away in the old hard-disk and I wonder if the HDD still works. The british site I frequent had de-registered. You can try the followings;

E36 DIY Links

go for Filip Malkov site, his link is in the above.. Good luck.

Hi jawzsg

Thanks for the reply and attention, any information specific to that particuliar induction set-up wiuld be most appreciated! I will check out the link you provided tonight. We only recieved the Euro models, including a handful of M3 R versions which Frank Gardener raced, very successfuly too I might add! It is a shame that many countries only were to recieve the US version, still it did not hurt the reputation or the cult following any just the same. There are about 8 examples of that platform in the perth BMW club, we have a show and shine in about a month, maybe i will take out 1st place for 3 series again? I note the picture of your ride that it is Alpine White, Euro M3 in that colour are a very purposeful looking machine. If you have the E46 Euro in SG then you will know the feel of the shove these things produce all the way to 8000 RPM. Mine scares the hell out of me, before you know it youve gone ballistic and theres a corner coming up!

Rob, we would love to see pics of your car and/or the show and shine next month, do keep in touch will ya.

As for your throttle bodies, errr, wtf are you doing messing with those mate?

Hi Phill

I did up-load some picks, I think they went into the members gallery? I can't find em now though, maybe it takes some time to check they arn't porno picks first eh? Can do on the Perth show and shine pics.

I also own a nearly classic muscle car, I have been into gas guzzling type machinery for many years, I used to rebuild 4 barrel carbs for bear money, jet and tune the damn things too! PS don't tell the masses, but Holley is a really shit product, OEM Rochester and Carter had it all over them for decades!

I am not at all daunted by 6 throttle bodies, frankly, given past results on my efforts, I am sure I can set em up better than BMW, time and proffit are of no constraint. Certain crucial benchline settings are critical, it is those that i am chasing. With the Euro set-up, the throttle blades are pretty well shut at idle, by-pass air is supplied by aux idle air srews. This air is suplemented by the equalising branch tube and the ICV. When the throttles are just cracked open, the air flow has to transition from the aux air bleeds to the main butterfly valves. This creates turbulance and hence is detrimental to fuel economy and to initial off-idle response. On these types of cars that means that 80% of the time the throttle air-flow is in transition phase. BMW set the throttles to being shut then adjust the aux air bleeds.

Anybody that knows any decent amount about carburation will know that for a smooth transition, fuel has to be flowing 80% from the idle disharge ports and 20% from the transfer slots. The same principal will work just fine for the M3 throttle bodies. I expect the net result will be better low end off idle torque, crisper pick-up on light throttle opening and fuel consumption figures of about 6.5 L per 100km on the highway.

Euro M3 have never been as sweet to drive around town as there low output single throttle body peers, and this is why.

mate, i had a 1050 dominator that we called the power carb, that thing made more horsepower on the dyno than an 1150 and 2 x 1150's for that matter!! The big holleys rock.

what is your nearly classic? an XD interceptor? heheh

dude, fark that, you either want HP or fuel economy, go for the HP. MAybe at idle have just one butterfly cracked, leave the other 5 alone. I reckon BMW know what they are doing mate!!
