E39 Gear box problem

I drive a 2003 E39 and recently, after a drive up north, I experienced jerking when accelerating and cruising. At low speed at less than 60KPH, the jerking felt like the ABS had activated. At higher speeds, the jerking felt like a misfiring engine or a blocked fuel line. These symptoms happened after the car could not start and it was diagnosed to be a failed battery. The symptoms remained after the battery was replaced. PML says it is due to gear slip because all electronics checked out OK. When I took the car to BVO, the symptoms did not appear. BVO suggested that I replace the gear oil and filter, but PML says this will definitely ruin the gear box because it is using "life time" oil. It seems like when I drive on S or M modes, the jerkings are less apparent or on some occassions, non-existent. Can some bros give some advice or have anyone of you experienced similar symptoms? Really appreciate any feedback...

Re: E39 Gear box problem

My E39 have the same symtoms of jerking when my alternator is starting to fail on me. Eventually the "BATT" warning light comes on which indicate that the battery is not been charge. Went to the workshop, change out the alternator, everything back to normal, no more jerking :) Don't know if this is the same case for you? Maybe you wanna check out the alternator as well?

Re: E39 Gear box problem

Incidentally, the jerking started after my batt failed. However, the jerking is still there after batt replacement and expert opinions still point to the auto trans problem. It is a good idea to have the alternator checked as well. Thank you for your advice.

Re: E39 Gear box problem

Ah...achilles heel of the Motronic system. Try disconnecting the battery for a good 15 mins to reset the DME/ECU...also check the connections at the battery and make sure they are secure.

Re: E39 Gear box problem

I have changed the gear oils on my 2003 E39 since 2005. No issues with auto or manual gear changes. In fact, gear changes are smoother.

Regards,
Alvin.

That means my gearbox should be shredded to bits by now... Haahaha...

Re: E39 Gear box problem

The transmission oil for my E39 also changed 4 months ago and it runs very smooth. Recommended to change after every 30k. PML are piece of crap .......

Re: E39 Gear box problem

I have experienced the same problem with my previous E39, which had done a 120k KM. Which was due for a gearbox change. I checked that PML estimated cost of changing the whole gearbox was abt 9k and 6k for re-con the gearbox at another workshop.. So i decided to de-register my 4½ year-old car to Dubai b4 the gearbox failure light was activated... So advise you to de-register/scrap it unless you want to keep the car for another few years then you should get a gearbox change..
