I am currently driving a pre f/l 318i and it is about time to think of a replacement...

I know it is basically down to personally prefernces but would like to hear out diff views here on whether to go for a brand new E90 320i or a 1 yo E46 320i bearing in mind the latter is a 6 cyclinders engine. Or any other equivalent models outside BMW that may be interesting.

Thakns for your views.

Regards

I will choose the e46 320i. Cheaper, betta engine, more moddable and u get to buy parts from other forummers letting go their ride.

E46 320 anytime. Think the E90 320 still has many bugs.

Re: E46 320i vs E90 320i

E46 320i wld be of better choice.
E90 320i is jus like driving the F/L E46 318i, must well don't change and save thew $$

Re: E46 320i vs E90 320i

E46 320i or if budget permits E90 325i, and if the sky's the limit, than has to be E90 330i

Re: E46 320i vs E90 320i

A 6 cyl is definitely the engine to go for. Depending on your budget, i would suggest you look at these options

e46 320
e46 325
e46 330
e90 325
e90 330

Any of these will drive better than your current 318. So with budget in mind, balance between getting a newer smaller engine vs older larger engine.

Good luck

Re: E46 320i vs E90 320i

Thanks for all your input and opinion, I guess I am actually leaning toward a 6 cyclinders engine BMW that they are well known for. Would love the new 2.5l E90 but it is above my budget.

Have anyone thought of the coming IS250 and perhap they will price it near to E90 320i range and this will look attractive.

Cheers

Suggest you wait till 1Q06 to compare the IS250 with the E90 325i.
Based on engine spec, the 325i develops slightly more BHP, but I think their 0-100 times are comparable ... both sub-8 secs. Think the IS250 is 205 PS (~203 BHP).

The new Lexus will switch to a V6 engine, vs the BMW's and current IS200's IL-6. My preference is still the IL-6 configuration.

Am not sure if the IS250 will be 6-speed or 5-speed auto with Tiptronic-type selector.

Also to note that Lexus has moved away from its front/rear dual wishbones suspension setup, to just rear dual wishbones ... while the front gets a multi-link setup.
But overall, looking at the Toyota Mark X (although they are different cars, sharing the same engine), the IS250 is something worth looking out for.

Price-wise, I think the IS250 will come close to the E90 320i, so its gonna be better value for money from the cylinder-count and BHP per dollar spent standpoint.

Re: E46 320i vs E90 320i

Over the weekend I viewed a 1yr 3 mth E46 320I asking for $115K, it work out to be 10k depreciation per year, do you guy think is ok, I was told by friends that it should be around 9k per year, not sure what is a fair depreciation. But as I am buying a second hand car they are deducting 7% off from my paper value of 59K which work out to be 4K. Is this the industry norm?

Thanks for your advise.

Re: E46 320i vs E90 320i

I think for a e46 320i that is 1 yr plus, the depreciation is abt $9.5k to $10k depending on whether you buy from owner or dealer.

On your separate qn, I gather u mean you are deregistering your own ride. If u dun use the paper to buy a new car, then the dealer will want 6 to 7% to hold on to your paper.

But if you buying that Bimmer from him, all these considerations irrelevant as u will wanna strike a package that u are happy with.

The E46 320i is a great car with a great engine. Have you considered other alternatives with that price in mind? I can give you a few examples but the very first car that came into my mind is the Golf GTi!

That is one great car with a great engine, gearbox and chassis. It is pretty well built as well. I know a 4 potter is inferior compared to a 6 cylinder but then again the power is fantastic. Its very zippy. I absolutely love it after the test drive.

Give it a thought bro. May just swing your decision around.

I'm sure T6 agrees with me :lol2: :)

Haha, sure I agree with u Brandons and might I add that 2 Bimmer forummers have already dumped their 5 series and collected or ordered their GTis. (Not me, so the rest of u who know me, pls dun pm or sms me hor).

Re: E46 320i vs E90 320i

Thanks T6 and Brandons for the advise, will continue with my search.....but no hurry as my car just turn 4th year and have next 6-12 months to work on.

Cheers

Re: E46 320i vs E90 320i

nahhhhh GTi got too much torque steer...............

Re: E46 320i vs E90 320i

How abouts a Golf R32? no torque steer, kick ass engine and tranny (get the DSG!)

Re: E46 320i vs E90 320i

The new Golf GT will be great if it is coming to sg having a 1.4 engine 170bhp and 240nm from 1750-4500rpm~

Re: E46 320i vs E90 320i

Borneo will not sell their IS250 cheap, look at how they priced their GS300 you can anticipate already. The latter is even more expensive than a E60 523i! Lexus Salesman will tell you they (Borneo) do not believe pricing competition, they charge S$ by per BHP.
