E46 Manual- Synchromesh is MASHED UP??

Hi Pros.....

This is beyond me....

I need some reassurances for the E46 5 speed manual gear box issue.

My 3rd gear is difficult(occasionally) to engage. But when downshift to 3rd, its clashes the gear teeth every single time(UNLESS i let the rpm spin down to idle). But that does'nt work cause it not how you drive!! Especially when you trying to heel toe.

1) I think maybe that the synchromesh is screwed?(but then, why always 3rd gear only?)

2) Could a low level manual gearbox oil fluid cause this too?

Waiting for Piggzboy or tripleM and the likes; to share some lights on this...

Ps.. I am retired from this mod virus, suggestion along the maintenance path, please?. :)

kum sia.

bro.....3rd gear got synchromesh meh? thought only 1st and reverse gear....

so u are saying only downshift and not upshift will grind ah? try to engage downshift to third slowly, see will grind or not. (with rpm still above idle of course)

hope this helps......

mod mod mod.......

Doesnt sound like synchromesh; if its a syncro problem it will be relieved by doing a toe-heel ie. blipping the throttle to match the rev. Your situation is quite the opposite. Anyway, most syncros wear on 2nd gear ie. lower gears that require syncros to work harder. If it happens in the cold, try changing the tranny fluid...most getrag boxes are factory filled with ATF (check label on tranny). Did mine with Dexron III and the shift was silky smooth even in the cold...BMW's lifetime fill is really a myth!! If this doesnt solve the issue, you may have a worn layshaft or a sloppy shift lever. You didnt mention when the gear clash occur ie downshifting from 4th into 3rd or 5th into 3rd??

it might be your gearshift mechanism itself rather than the transmission. maybe check your bushings, selector rod for damage or wear?

Modding Diapers and anti rash cream... and better ear plugs.

Thats the problem, downshift slowly can kill you when approaching a corner... Nearly had me once when i could'nt shift into 3rd and i was starting the sweep already...so went in on the turn on NEUTRAL gear..nearly died.

Hi, thanks. Anyway, does not matter from which gear. As long as its DOWNSHIFTING INTO 3rd gear...it happens.....
Not using ATF as its a manual gear box. Already on torco oil.

Will check...maybe the UUC DSSR? hmm.

Re: E46 Manual- Synchromesh is MASHED UP??

i was about to tell u .. it could be ur DSSR...

Now actually , it may not be that something is wrong with ur tranny but u noe that the DSSR makes it more accurate so they say to enter shifts, what might be going on is that ur not being accurate urself, having driven ur car .. i know that i have to find the point to enter .. if not .. like always.. it'll grind on 3rd, why 3rd and not the rest cause it's naturally more diff if u think abit it.. shift up vertically. with more freeplay you it might be able to compensate u with abit. just my thoughts bro

the DSSR has metal bushings right? shouldn't have that much wear and tear.

but then again, it's a UUC product.......... so must be installation error if it's found to be the culprit:juggle:

Re: E46 Manual- Synchromesh is MASHED UP??

Since its not speed/gear dependent, certainly seems like a layshaft or shift lever issue. Careful about the tranny oil, Getrags can be factory filled with ATF, doesnt mean manual box has to be GL5 fluid. There is a tag on the tranny to confirm the correct fluid. Filling it(ATF) with GL5 will affect the synchro function and shift action as synchro works on friction...Have fun
