E46 320 has no major reliability issues. The M54 in-line 6 engine is bullet proof.

Common problem is just the window regulator gives way after 3-4 years. $100+ fix. Other than that, it's a relaible car.
Bro, E90 in-line 6 engine also not bad what....

AFAIK, the inline 4 is more problematic than the inline 6. But not to the extent that it's unreliable.

Just go down to any BMW workshop like BVO or J4C and speak to the mechanics. They will always tell you to buy a 320 and above if possible.
Bro, you're a natural salesman leh.... Well done!

Well... you should be able to get one end 2003/ early 2004 E46 318i for about $72-$74k depends on condition. My friend juz got one 2 weeks back for $74k!

End 2005 E90 320i for about $103k, another of my friend juz got it 2 weeks ago too!

Strongly encourage u to get a 6 cylinder, thats what beamer's for... Enjoy!

Re: E46 vs E90 320i

The advice here from ALL the bros are the 6-cyc! Win hands down! Left right and center.
No need to consider 318 anymore.

3 choices for purchasing a E46 320 (2004):
(1) PML premium selection
(2) dealer
(3) private

which option is advisable? and why?

Appreciate your advice, thanks.

No hard and fast rule buying a used car - it always is a case of balancing value against risk of getting a lemon. Do your research wisely.

Unless you're getting a warranty from PML or a dealer, try to buy private as it is usually cheaper to buy direct from a private seller.

Buy from a conservative owner who seldom travel out of Singapore (but one who has kept good service records) or from an enthusiast (as sometimes an enthusisast may look after his car really well).

If you see a car you like, just go up to the owner and say sincerely to him or her "Next time you want to sell your car, let me know hor" and then wait for his or her call. That's how I bought my car. Good luck.

Agreed 100%. Bought my cabrio from fellow forumer ACSCab1 and have never look back since.

Re: E46 vs E90 320i

I have to ask this silly question : IS250 or E46 320? Though they are not direct comparisons, still would like your thoughts. Tks.

Handling and mod-ability, the E46 wins hands down.

You can almost buy 2 E46 320's with IS250 money. How to compare?

But if you must, IS250 is more refined, very well-built with a decently powerful engine. Looks pretty good too. Locally, not much to mod except aesthetics and handling.

E46 is well built, sweet handling and if you wanna mod your car, you can go crazy, especially with all the used parts that are coming out of this forum. You want power, there are easy bolt-on solutions that can bring your car up to very decent levels of power.

If I had $130k to spend, I'd buy a new as possible E46 320 and mod it to close to 400bhp and take the leftover money and go for a nice holiday with the family...

Re: E46 vs E90 320i

cbs, regarding the window regulator, it can actually be fix with a better hook.

I saw how BVO open up the door, the hook is actually make of plastic clips, if only we can mod to a metal, i guess the regulator can hold up longer.

those plastic really weak, i take the broken parts and try to break it. Without any effort put in, the part turns to 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64...:screwedu:

Re: E46 vs E90 320i

lads, do you think I'll be able to buy a mid 2004 E46 320 for low $80+? Most of those in sgcarmart are going for high 80s or even 90+.

Re: E46 vs E90 320i

funny, i want to sell my E46 just 2 months back, was quoted $69K, so hold back till Sept for another price.

i almost got carrot ?

Re: E46 vs E90 320i

I just change my E46 318 to E90 320.Both car r having the same engine so reliability shouldn't be a problem. What u have on the new car is 7 more horse, higher torque,6 speed gear box and lots more features. Its definitely more economical than the E46.Power is not bad compared to the old model but the road holding on the E90 is fantastic.Stiffer body, more rigid and slightly harder spring.
