E60 Aircon Issues: Any advise?

Hi Bros,

Lately the aircon seems to be acting a little funny. Normal city drive, driving to work and home, shopping trips etc aircon is perfect and quite cold actually - need to keep on lowest setting on Auto. But during long drives (> 1 hour) or esp on hot afternoons on the expressways the aircon just goes off and starts blowing air - no cooling at all. Tried changing all settings and air-flow controls etc but no luck.

Model: E60 523i XL (LCI)

What could be the reason? Any advise and has anyone faced a similar issue?

Cheers,
AK

Did you notice that when the air coming out is warm that the fan speed actually goes up? And, the air seems to be blowing at the windscreen as if it was trying to demist the windscreen.

Well, a quick and dirty trick to overcome this for the time being is to off the air-con for a minute (maybe even for a shorter duration) and then turn it back on again. To do this just press the button that has an icon of an ice flake.

Air-con should return to normalcy again. At least until it happens again.

Not sure if it is cooling coils (very likely) but I wonder if there is some kind of temperature sensor that went crazy to cause this.

P.S. I am still doing this and have yet to seek a permanent solution. If changing of the cooling coils work for you please pm me on cost and where you have it fixed.

Cheers

Re: E60 Aircon Issues: Any advise?

Nope! Actually works perfectly fine and absolutely no issues except for the scenarios mentioned Bro.

Anyways, thanks for the tip - let me try this out. Will surely let you know once I get this fixed permanently.

Cheers!

Hi there,

I had my cooling coil replaced 6 months ago, the parts cost between 400-500.

Re: E60 Aircon Issues: Any advise?

Hi there,

Just to share with you on my encounter with the air con.....

I had my cooling coil, valve, filter replaced 6 months ago as the air con was not cold totally, I also encounter air blowing at the windscreen which someone has mentioned in one of the posts. Coincidentally, the blowing of windscreen was also no longer happening after I had the cooling coil replaced. Btw, if your aircon is fine during short drives, it will not be cooling coil.

However, recently I had the same experience in which after travelling for around an hour, I can feel that the air coming out from the vent is not as cold, this is not happening during short drives. I brought my car for a check and it seems that the compressor is working fine. In the end, it points down to a sensor that is faulty that causes freezing of the cooling coil, so when it freezes, it seems that air is not coming out from the aircon vent. Workaround is to "off the snowflake look alike button" for a short while, and then on it again.

I did check that the price of the sensor is around $50, but in order to change the sensor, whole dashboard needs to be out AGAIN..... OMG.

Bro, I was driving the E60 too.

Similar symptoms. aircon working mostly. But will off by itself ( means have blower just no cold air). If I restart the aircon - toggle snowflake switch, it usually comes back cold.

Hot day like 34 degrees start stop traffic, aircon is blowing cool air, not enough to chill. BUT still working.

This kind usually not leaking- if you check with aircon shop and the meter shows enough gas. also means your cooling coil OK usually.

Change compressor was what i did. around 1k all in. 1/2 day job. after that no more problem. super freaking cold until people ask to turn higher temperature.

=)

Re: E60 Aircon Issues: Any advise?

Good info vegadonovan! Yes similar situation as yours but funnily its been working perfectly of late and never had the need to fiddle with the settings or the snowflake button. Maybe I haven't driven long enough on a hot afternoon.

Yup - last servicing the SE said the compressor might be an issue but I am not convinced as the cooling power is very strong generally with enough cold air-force. Could be the sensor as mentioned by bh0322 but I am hesitant to get the whole dashboard dismantled to check it. Driving up North over this weekend so it will be a good test. If any issues I will come and get it fixed asap and update.

PS: Do you miss your E60? What you riding now?

Cheers,
AK
