E60 Gearbox oil change interval ??

Hi,

what's the gearbox oil change interval for a E60 6 speed autobox ?

Just bought a 2nd hand E60 and was wondering if it's time to change the gearbox oil.

Since there are no replies, I'll reply to my own question - the standard answer from Auto Bavaria (it's a Malaysian car) is 100,000km. HOWEVER, I just had the gearbox oil drained at 80,000km and it is B L A C K and full of sediments. No wonder the gearbox was not shifting smoothly into 2nd.

The gearbox oil is different from the 6 speed autobox to the 5 speed (and don't believe your mechanic when he says it's the same - apparently they are different grade of oil - I need to flush my gearbox again and fill with the correct oil) and the gearbox oil filter is rather expensive now... compared to previous.

I wouldn't leave my gearbox oil change to 100k km, probably 30k or 40k intervals.

hardly anyone changes their trans fluid in this world!!. The trans service kit should be about 400 bucks at most. 100k should be ok in almost every instance, if you are anal, do it every 50k.

I guess it's fine if you don't keep the car more than a few years.

My car is a MY2004. Gearshift not so smooth anymore.....

Trust me, the gearbox oil gets really dirty by 80k km.

I change my gearbox oil every 60K. The reason for the high cost is because the filter is actually integrated into the oil pan of the gearbox.
When i drained the oil at 120K, it was pretty clean. Reason for this is probably because i travel to Malaysia every week. Mabye because of town or city driving and the constant shifting, it dirtys the oil?
Anyway, better safe than sorry.

The filter cost me $300, the oil $133 and labor $80. Done at BVO.

Finally changed it. Gearbox oil filter was $260 and the oil (ZF Lifeforce/Lifeline ??? for 6 speeder) was $32/litre. Unfortunately, while it helped the shifting alittle, still found the gearchange alittle jerky on 2nd gear...

It could be s/w upgrade you need for your car rather than just gear box oil change...get the latest version from BMW service if the s/w has never been updated.

I heard that the MY2004 520 have the gear box jerking problem. You were saying that this problem can be solve by doing the update?

yes it is possible head down to pml and get them to check if equired they should recommend an upgrade to the latest progman version.

the E60 gearbox oil supposed to last for life.....

some reviews overseas says that changing it will cause problem to gearbox....

and this gearbox does not have any gear oil filter...

i dont know why u all change what gearbox filter... are u guys refffering to engine oil filter???

yes it has oil filter.. but for e60 its integrated into the oil pan. so gota change the whole thing..

it doesnt last for life, oil breaks down no matter wat...BMW says that to preserve the environment, and sell new transmissions if it fails...

debatable issue, some cars is running for more than 100k without change of ATF yet still fine.

my car gear box died at 70k.
