E60 LCI 520i and 520i XL Questions

morning bros.. i'm looking at preowned LCI E60.. preferably 523 if able to find reasonable priced ones. Realised used cars dealers have increased the price of 523 quite a fair bit in the past 2 weeks. Just few questions:

1. There are 520i and 520i XL.. what are the differences in features?

2. I think I will get worried whenever thinking of getting one which mileage is above 80k km. Anything to look out for for those above 80k km? Like I read that gearbox after 100k km will tend to be worn out soon etc..

3. The E-gear for LCI - is it problematic? Any insights on comparison of the gear pre-LCI against e-gear for the LCI?

4. Anyone letting go their E60 (520, 523)

Thanks in advance for any advice..

bro, we buy 2nd hand car bcoz depreciation lower and within our budget range... 100k range is where all the wear & tear parts start to come one after another..

what do u think that those rich ppl all throw their cars after 3yrs, or above 80k?

Re: E60 LCI 520i and 520i XL Questions

Prices seems to be creeping up. I guess dealers are trying their luck with the increased COE.

Suggest that you take your time. Look and look again. Any hint of problem dont buy even if cheap. Repairs could make a big hole in pocket.

My 525 is still doing fine: now 59K KM, second time it went in for service. ATF and filter change today (workshop here gave me a good deal cos I used them before). Other than that changed rear brake pads and a new set of tyres.

Smooth since the trip up Penang.

Good luck to your purchase.
Cheers

Re: E60 LCI 520i and 520i XL Questions

bro.. those 06/07 E60 now per yr abt 11k plus.. shld be within budget.. but be prepared to spend between 5k to 10k to replace wear n tear parts along the way.

Re: E60 LCI 520i and 520i XL Questions

exactly.. these dealers just wanna make fast bucks. I saw a Nov09 lci e90 put up for sale by an owner at 139k.. few days later it was selling at 154k!

thanks for the advice bro.. yeah i'm taking my time.. telling myself not to make any rash decisions..

E-gear was supposed to shift faster according to my se (4yrs ago)

An example of potentially how lasting bmw can be .... see my signature, 160k km and gearbox still running though i have changed my atf 4 times thru the years

But search thru the threads and you can find others with gearbox that go up lorry before 100k km.

As for 520, pre lci ones are 6 cyl 2.2l but lci 520 is the 4 cyl 2.0 .

Re: E60 LCI 520i and 520i XL Questions

wow 160k.. that's alot.. so those whose gear kaput before 100k are due to lack of maintenance?

Yeah pre-lci 520 will be a better buy with inline 6 ya.. but I prefer the lci lights and interiors changes..

Re: E60 LCI 520i and 520i XL Questions

Hi , I recently bought my used 525i from ppsl and year 09/2009 mileage is 26777km but already 2 owner and I bought it for $152k . Smell still like new car condition I do not know if I have a good buy for this car . The ex owner just change a new RFT before selling it . After driving for 2 weeks the car power is there but the pick up seem heavy is that normal for the 5 series ? The petrol consumption is quite high ....! So better to consider before buying a 5 series . My previous E90 is quite ok with the petrol and the pick up is there ...! Anyway , the 5 series is very stable ...! Now I am waiting for a good deal for my 17 inch rims so that i can upgrade to 19 inch . Any good price for the 19 inch rims ? Prefer the rims in matt finnish easy to maintain ....if I am not wrong . Any suggestion for the rims ?

Re: E60 LCI 520i and 520i XL Questions

an 08 onwards 525 will be best for u. comes with gps/ soft close doors..... but do note that some 08/ 09 cars have pretty low coes...... buying from ppsl will be a better choice, they only sell cars that r serviced by them n with low mileage (therefore the prices will definitely be higher), plus they give extended warranty. actually cars with around 70k mileage will have wear n tear parts to replace soon. either get a 20k-30k mileage car or dun worry about the mileage coz there r some cars with high mileage but r well taken care of, with most parts replaced (as good as new, altho no new car smell). btw, mileage can be altered..... dun worry about fc, it's not that bad, i'm getting about 9 to 10l per 100km on my 523XL. n with DS mode n cheonging like no tomorrow, i still get around 7- 8.....

Re: E60 LCI 520i and 520i XL Questions

Ricky,

Perhaps the previous driver drive very conservatively and seldom "exercise" the car so the ecu becomes retarded.
Bring the fellow for a few long and hard drive then you should be smiling back all the way.
If it still doesn't impove, send it to a mechanic.....

FC wise, sometimes i get to as bad as 7+km/l so dun worry.
How high is your high ???

Why do you have to wait for a good deal for your 17in before getting the 19in?
Go look for your 19in and the tyre shop selling you the new set should be buying the present set at pretty good price.

Really appreciate your time to reply me . Yes , I do understand that mileage low have to pay higher price . This morning I went back to ppsl regarding my car bluetooth problem that cannot configure to my phone . Advisor say have to send in to have it diagnoise . I was told by the salesmen that the 5series went up in prices especially the 08/09 model . My car does not come with suction door but comes with the wide gps screen . Mine is a 525i and what is the different with the XL ? .
Fuel diffinitely higher than yours around 7to8 if drive constantly otherwise around 6/7 if driving fast and keep stopping .
Yes the previous owner took great care of the car and can even smelly like new car feeling .
Thanks bro for your advise and share your experience with me .
Cheers

That sound familiar. I did a gearbox reset and it improved. Not sure if it was psychological. Now after a run up to Penang and ATF change, all seems like what a 525 is suppose to be.

FC is not that good but not that far off from my old car so impact is insignificant.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Cheers
