E60 shutting down by itself

Anybody has this experience?

While stopping at the traffic light the car went from "d" mode to "n" automatically and the engine dies and gotta restart in order to move again.

Sent to pml,they did diagnostics but can't find any fault.

This issue has been happening about 6times over the past month or so.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

2. ignition coil faulty
3. spark plugs faulty.
4. bad tune
5. some intake valve thingy
6. hole at intake

3.5years

When it happened,thought it was battery problem since never changed battery before,so had a battery change,who knows one week later same thing happen again.

Don't believe if they tell you this is normal.

They had the car for the whole afternoon,told me diagnostics showed nothing wrong...but I told them to take the car for another day to check.

Went online and did some research,seems that it happened quite frequent in overseas and was mainly in cars made in 2009 n before and they also had problems finding out what had happened until,someone found out that it's a dme software issue and an update was what is needed to solve the whole issue.

But when I called pml back and told them what I found out online,they told me no such thing happened before.

That's why I am posting here to see if this issue happened in sg before.

And it can't be the aircon that is spoilt cos I changed a blower recently,about three months back
Battery was new,one half to two weeks back.
Not forgetting spark plugs was changed one month back

So am really at a loss of what is happening,cos its really scary for this thing to happen

Hope I am not scaring you... but there may be a possibilty of a Gearbox failure...

My friend's Volvo XC90 was 4 yrs old.. quite high mileage.. juz a few months back.. he encounter the same problem.. While on the "D" mode driving.. the car suddenly drop to "N" mode then engine stalled.

Mechanic told him Gearbox gonna up lorry soon... but no sense to change Gearbox becoz he already booked the 535GT.

It happened quite a few times .. but he manage to drag the problem by installing a "ATF" cooler... while waiting for his 535GT to arrive 2 weeks ago..

The XC90 ended up scraped.

Hope I am not scaring you... but there may be a possibilty of a Gearbox failure...

same shit happened to my 2007 nov e-60 few months back. some workshop say gearbox up lorry, this fault, that fault, etc, however, only did a software upgrade although diagnostic showed no fault. problem never reoccur since..... maybe u can go try as software upgrading is the cheapest n easiet option before going into any major repairs....

Pml told me today my idling rpm was too low and diagnostics said that only,did not get a upgrade,can I know where did u go for to get an upgrade?

Faced exactly same problem as you........Change the gear shaft which comes with some software upgrade....Damage 1.5K....

I have exactly the same problem with my 2009 E60. I brought it over to my regular mechanic but he told me no problem detected. My problem seems more severe as before the engine die on me, there is some knocking sound that seems to come from below the car.

So Man13utd13, how did you solve your problem and where? How much? I need help as I am now scared of stopping by the traffic fearing my engine will die off and never start again. I am trying to avoid sending to PM as I think I will be slaughtered big time.

You meant the lights indicates from D to N and engine died but the gear shaft still at D? Mine was problem of car just stall at low speed and R2D helped to diagnosed the problem and it was fixed.

Hi guys
I would like to post an update. I have installed an updated Engine DME programme. It has been 3 weeks now and my E60 engine is behaving itself so far. No more stall engine. So for those of you having similar problem, get a software update, the problem is not the gearbox or selenoid.

It is basically a software upgrade. I understand from the mechanic that dme sofware is the program that controls the engine. I did it at BVO at a cost of $120. Waiting time for the installation is some 2.5 hours.

I just recently encountered similar problem (engine shutdown and gear moved from D to N ) May i follow up with you if the issue was totally resolved after you sent to BVO.
