hi need some advise....

My 2005 E90 320i recently engine drink oil like crazy.... started 6 mths back with every 3,000km top up 1 ltr......but after the last servicing..... it eats up 2 ltrs within 10days.

car approaching 100,000km mileage.... 2 wks back changed engine mount, ATF fluid and fixing up some visible oil leaks near gear box area..... also oil change service with thicker oil used (WS said is 10w50, was using 5w40 in the past).

Initially thought this will improve the engine oil loss issue but turn out oil loss faster.

Now WS advise to go for engine top overhaul.......anyone done it before and can share your experience and cost ?

Thanks in advance, good day.

Just did mine quoted $6k from the big boys. Paid $4400 at a recommended bimmer workshop.

Re: E90 320i engine top overhaul

Actually how would a top overhaul address the oil loss issue?
Is there oil leaking out from the cam cover or head gasket?

Maybe check with your workshop first on what exactly they think is the problem and how the proposed work will fix it.

Re: E90 320i engine top overhaul

i dun think a top overhaul might solve your problem.
maybe u wanna seek a 2nd opinion with another workshop cos the more likelier culprits are the gaskets and seals.

Re: E90 320i engine top overhaul

go ask Rodney from R2d for a 2nd opinion.

saw a couple of cars with the same problem there last week. he got them sorted out...

Re: E90 320i engine top overhaul

Hi, I also have the same problem. After 3000km, I started to add 1 litre of engine oil. Afterwhich almost every 1000km + -, I need to top up a litre. Now 5000km after servicing, I have already added 3 litres of engine oil. Asked WS to check. No leakage found but was told that this is normal for 3 series. Currently I am using 5W50 which is recommended by older car, 5 yrs & above. Mileage 134k.

Re: E90 320i engine top overhaul

My oil loss was really bad, 3 litres within 6 days at the worst time.....then workshop recommended me to replace valve seals.
Then the workshop mechanic left, new mechanics took over. So I sent in another time to top up oil cos they promised me free top ups till i got my car repaired.

Then the new mechanics found out, both my valve cover and oil sump was leaking badly which I replaced at the same workshop but different mechanic less than 3 months ago.

So they replaced both gaskets and redid everything but I had to pay again but with abit discount.........unfair to me but I LL......

Yesterday discovered flywheel oil seal leaking....

Now monitoring the oil leaks, hopefully solved the problem.

So do not go for the top overhaul first. Seek a second opinion with another workshop. Don just take 1 workshop's word for it.

Is your mileage very high? Sounds like a lot of problems all at once!

Re: E90 320i engine top overhaul

Thanks for all the replies.

I went to 2 different site sponsors and both suggested engine top overhaul citing common problem for E90 320i at mileage close to 100k.
All visible oil leaks repaired with either seal or gasket replaced and they suspect the problems are inside the engine.

Any other specialised shop to recommend ?

Thanks

Went to view the Red F30 on display yesterday......seems more spacious compared to E90 but now cars so exp......must tahan!!! lol

How about PML?

Re: E90 320i engine top overhaul

not comfortable with PML since the last time under warranty for them to fix the air-con not cold issue

Re: E90 320i engine top overhaul

what does top overhaul means?

imho, if engine eat oil, means there is a leak somewhere. else where the oil go to?

Re: E90 320i engine top overhaul

with my superficial technical knowledge..... top overhaul is to replace some valve or ring at the piston area....this is to replace the wear & tear and bring the engine back to near new performance level.

if the leak occur around the piston and it will burn together with the petrol/fuel hence the disappearing engine oil.

Re: E90 320i engine top overhaul

do note that top overhaul is not fix-it-all
imagine paying a few ks and realise its not solved so its best to take a closer look to diagnose the actual problem

Re: E90 320i engine top overhaul

well said. it's not about willing to spend a few k to overhaul.
must fix the right spot!
