E90 Gear Box issue

Hi Bros,

My 2008 E90 on GM gearbox recently "kaput" along expressway.

While travelling on the 1st lane on the expressway, my gear suddenly alternate between P to D.

Stop by the breakdown lane, put my gear to P, stop the car and restart the engine. but the issue still there. The car couldn't move and I had to tow it to the WS. Was told by the WS it due to faulty mechatronic and was quoted 4k plus to rectify the issue.

Wanna know if any bros here encounter similar issue. would it be beta to replace the entire gearbox or just replace the faulty mechatronic.

Re: E90 Gear Box issue

mechatronic = valves + solenoids and supposely also change atf + oil pan during the replacement
should be as good as new if the problem is solved entirely
no need to replace the gearbox if problem is resolved

Re: E90 Gear Box issue

My GB mechatronic was exchanged last year due to the same problem.

Re: E90 Gear Box issue

why does the mechatronic break down ? any driving habits that can help reduce such occurrence?

Re: E90 Gear Box issue

it's wear and tear. the solenoids and valves worn out after 100,000km changing gears ...

Hi all,
Sorry TS, Pls help. My problem with my e90 2005 seems to be same problem. For pass few months, when i was trying to overtake, climbing or going down slope, when i step on the acelerator, there are vibration sound coming from the front. there was no error code. I had send to ws and they change the ignition coil and spark plugs. The problem still remain. Any seniors can helps. Thanks.

Re: E90 Gear Box issue

hmm, can be due to valvetronic but valvetronic will throw error code whether the valvetronic motor or sensor up lorry

Re: E90 Gear Box issue

Common issue on the mechatronics on older cars. You will have to check mecha-sleeves and solenoids, but if mechatronics goes, you just have to spend the $$$ and pray that the tranny does not need any repair yet.....

Re: E90 Gear Box issue

question: when picking up a "new" used car, is there an effective way to detect the mechatronic, or even transmission problem?
Thanks for help.

In any case, you are supposed to get the "new" used car checked with a BWM specialist, no matter how "new" the used car is. If they cannot detect, pray.

Bro, i did a repair job on my E90 320 box a year ago, a shop at defu lane 1 did a good job at below $400. If you want i can give you the contact.

Re: E90 Gear Box issue

Hi Seniors,
In order to prevent us from having the situation like cancerian26, should we change valves + solenoids and supposely also change atf + oil pan at 100,000km?

Re: E90 Gear Box issue

Curious what was "repaired" for $400?

For the E90 gearbox, it's either changing the solenoids or full overhaul. Both are definitely way way over $400 repair cost.

If it's just to reset your gearbox adaptation, the price paid would be way too high.

Re: E90 Gear Box issue

Obvious tell tale sign is jerking in the gears, or when slight jerk when stopping. Try in manual and auto mode.

Speclalist workshop will hookup to the autologic unit, to detect the gearbox values. They can tell the condition based on the values throw out by the gearbox.

The WS flash my gearbox after which the gear change and performance improved a lot, saved me big $$ for overhaul or change of gearbox.

Another option if above doesn't works.. Get an insurance coverage for your ride, can save you quite a bit (provided reading detect error & replacement parts included in the coverage booklet).

Either way, u still gotta pray..

Cheers.
