e92 335 engine vibrating

Hi,

just recently encountered while driving halfway, the engine starts to vibrate violently/shuddering when u step on the accelerator pedal and there is a severe loss of power. (feels like u engaged 5th gear at 20kmh)

on ocassions the engine check light comes out, sometimes no warning message.

Stopping by the side of the road and starting the car again, it is back to normal.

anyone encountered such a problem and know what is the problem.

Its an intermittent problem that might not surface when you bring it to a workshop.

thanks

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

Likely to be HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) issue. Common in N54 engines.

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

Thanks for the quick response!

i'll highlight this. to the mechanic.

what worries me is, if u get the HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) replaced, is it a matter of time before it breaks down again?

or is the replacement part rectified to be much more reliable than the original that came with the car?

any idea if this is covered under the TWM warranty?

Thanks again

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

One or more of your ignition coils may be faulty too. This part should be covered under the TWM warranty but the claiming process is a real pain in the ***..
TWM is a complete waste of time. Pure BS.

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

oh i thought it was a matter of the authorised garage claiming from TWM as long as its a warranty covered part?

or do we have to pay 1st and claim from TWM?

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

The HPFP issue has long been documented in e90post, starting from the theory of Borsch HPFP replaced by Siemen HPFP and what not. There is even a lawsuit against BMW USA concerning the turboes and the HPFPs.

Bmw Law Suit Hpfp

It is an "erratic" fault - some cars can change the HPFP few times within a small mileage, some cars do not have issues for 30-40K mileage. It seemed that replacement parts are no better - but you do not have a choice. As for warranty coverage, it should, but you better check with your workshop. The part is around $800 without labour, so not sure if you wanna claim.

Their list of authorised workshops is a joke. Your car needs to be serviced by TWM. Secondly they'll want as far as possible to have your car repaired by them and not at their autnorised workshops. A simple repair such as a change of ignaition coil may put you back at least half a day as
1. Their workshop is busy and you'll have to take a queue number.
2. Waiting for the warranty/claim approval.
3. Disgnosing your car's fault. These guys don't even trust their own computer's reading. After knowing the fault and error code, more time is wasted as they'll take the faulty part/parts out and have them tested over and over again. It's like they don't even trust their own machine ore computer readings.

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

this sounds frightening.

meaning the HPFP will affect all 740s, 535s who are all using the same fuel pumps?

my car's mileage is abt 38k and it started only 2 days ago, but prior to this, i experienced longer than usual cranking start ups, which i suppose is a prequel symptom to the HPFP issue?

now the longer cranks disappear, and this more serious issue surfaces.

its dangerous as you cannot anticipate when the issue will occur while driving.

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

Hi Levin,

Please make sure the coming replacing HPFP is this part number: 135 175 94 943

BMW has released this new revised pump to replace the one below.

The older one is this part number: 135 175 92 881

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

thanks, i'll note that down. i'll see if i can do it via BMW specialist workshops instead of going to TWM.

like what rodders said, its a long wait at TWM cos of the volume they handle and they do not seem as experienced.

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

Go through your TWM workshops rather than going to Khang direct.

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

Your problem sounds familiar. Had to replace the fuel pump on my car when it happened. But my car when thru a hell lot before it gave way.

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

could be a boost/vacuum leak too.. had this problem after i replaced the hpfp at pml and when i brought it back to pml, they told me its due to some hoses not secured properly or something..

So TWM is another insurance bull$hit?

I've heard of successful claims though sometimes they need a little nudge for larger amounts.

Technical skills is......

This HPFP thind is damn sian. Like a time bomb waiting to explode!

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

Boss Motorsports is an authorised workshop under TWM group and has experience doing fuel pumps. Having said, best to check with them as I heard some workshops not keen to deal with TWM for the reasons Rodders cited, like they wanna be super sure that they have to pay then they will pay type.

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

thanks for all the feedback.

just spoke to the mechanic briefly over the phone, and he guessed it was either the HPFP or the ignition coil. more likely the HPFP after i told him its a 335.

he told me that after they diagnose the car, they will fax the findings over to TWM for approval to go ahead. verbally he mentioned that the HPFP is covered under the warranty scheme.

hope this pulls through smoothly.

and yes, i agree its like a time bomb waiting to explode, knowing that a part is just waiting to fail...

Hi,
Which workshop did you go through to claim from TWM please ?

Re: e92 335 engine vibrating

going thru BVO. They have to submit like a quote/approval form to TWM.
