ECU Remap

Without mentioning any names, someone's E9X M3 in Singapore had its Engine and Drivetrain warranty voided during an attempted warranty claim.

BMW regional took the ECU for analysis and found out the ECU had been reflashed and rev limiter increased.

I'm not discrediting any aftermarket mods. I have changed my E9X M3 muffler to extract more sound than horsepower. Could they have voided my warranty ? Yes they could if they wanted to.

Just a little perspective here.

Stock E9X M3 (4000cc): 414Bhp

M3 GTS (4500cc): 444Bhp

Difference: 30hp. The M3 has always been a fine product from BMW and I'd like to think M Division's Chiefs knows what they are doing. If more horsepower could be extracted for the S65 by retuning, the engineers would've done this for the GTS.

I think its fair to say, if you want to mod, you can forget about warranty.

Those who wants a redneck amount of horsepower and warranty has lapsed, take the Supercharger route + the above tune.

However those with Actuarial Science degrees in Singapore should know, many drivers can't even handle a 280Hp All Wheel Drive Japanese car.

Many of us are willing spend ($ insert amount) to gain 10-20hp but not willing to spend $1000-$2000 in drivers training to learn how to use the other 414hp.

yeah, i totally agree with you.. BMW built the engine for the maclaren almost 2 decades back... sure these guys know what they've been doing... i've always felt that power and control works hand in hand... just look at the murderous C63 Jeremy Clarkson was driving and you'll see what i mean... too much power isn't always great... :naughty:

driver's training is the way to go!! anyone around here care to share about some experience? :woottt:

couldnt agree more...what u juz mentioned is some wisest and discerning view i have come across

Re: ECU Remap

definitely spending $ to zhng the driver is very important.

m3 in itself is already a high performance car hence skills at the wheel very important.

what i think the Tune would achieve is to get nearer to 414bhp at the wheel, as currently it is about 350-370 dyno-ed at the wheel. if anyone know anything more, please feel free to chip in.

Re: ECU Remap

B2 have u heard the Akra Grand Prix or some other special version Exos??

ask SLK to show u. haha

recently cos my Air Filter was choked, and servicing didnt check and fix it. no stock for AF but have stock for Air Intake sys. so.... guess i went for the easier solution,

Re: ECU Remap

I was thinking Akra can actually get the GT4 version aka catless. But people say smelly like chao cheesepie. The rear diffuser also will be blackened. Think Evo good enough lah.

We must stay twin until I respray color :D

Re: ECU Remap

Nizam, did you MTM your S3 & RS4 with PA? If so, they warrantied hence you had a peace of mind. Now.... which tuned bimmer didn't face a problem?

Re: ECU Remap

when u respraying? what color? i heard Hot Pink is very very attractive to women.....

catless.... maybe not. smell turns me off..

Re: ECU Remap

Whatever tune you get, make sure you RPM limiter is not raised. The stock valve springs are not good above the stock 8,250rpm cutoff (DCT).

Re: ECU Remap

Maybe next year. Was thinking between jerez black or monte carlo blue.

Owner attractive to women can already. Car is secondary lol

Re: ECU Remap

Indeed Mr Ghost
im also very sensitive about the RPM as well. good warning .

guys considering ecu maps shld explore all potential problems and issues first, because ECU after all is the brain that works all the hardware..

Yes, MTMed the S3 with Premium Auto. Went to Stage 3. No issues - still ran like clock work. Yes, PA "warranty" gave me peace of mine.

RS4 was tuned by aftermarket tuner (not PA). No issues so far - and it has been 2 years since remap. The biggest benefit was not so much the power increase (which was definitely noticeable), but the removal of some flat spots of the factory tune. Smoother and more linear.

Coming back to the M3, have not done any ECU remap. Yet.

Re: ECU Remap

i'll share my experience with the m3 once i get all the statistics and test drives sorted

The M3 also has a few flat spots to 4k rpm if you notice on WOT.
But after that, it pulls pretty linear all the way to redline.

Re: ECU Remap

i think the flat spots occur between 1.5k rpm to 2.8k rpm, especially from gear 2-3.

one question, when you are on M mode and flooring the throttle, do you get a big response every gear change, a push back feeling?

It becomes pretty much "softer" past 4th gear at WOT redline.
1-2-3-4 very BRUTAL.
5-6-7 fairly un-sensational.

Re: ECU Remap

Next week is good! I still havent remapped ECU.. I was thinking of not touching the engine for 1 year, its been more than a year now :)

I noticed a flat spot between 6k-8k rpm. That should be the point where the torque curve dips?
