engine oil... 0w40 and 5w40

Re: engine oil... 0w40 and 5w40

bro iken, sounds serious.

If it is still under warranty, then you must obviously go PML. If not I thnk you can try any one of the sponsor workshops... less likely to kena chop than PML.

Re: engine oil... 0w40 and 5w40

0W is normally for new car.It will be really good if you use 0w from the first servicing but once you use 5w , you cannot reverse back to 0w . You will notice the engine oil will finish very fast .
If budget allows, 5w50 will be the best for Singapore .5W40 will be good enough.
Try to buy Euro Brand oil for Conti Car.

Re: engine oil... 0w40 and 5w40

Thanks Highbury... I just left my car at one of the sponsor workshops, who hooked up the computer to diagnose the LEMON... turn out some fault with the servometer or something... there goes another $700....

And that is still not the engine oil problem! Workshop said could be leaking gasket or engine wear and tear... :verysad:

Re: engine oil... 0w40 and 5w40

Iken, Can the car still be driven when the engine malfunction indicator comes on? Ok. just keep your fingers crossed that there are no more issues.

I've had this gasket leaking issue for quite a while also. Both PML and one of the sponsor workshop say that it is slight and not too serious. That was six months ago so I have not done anything about it. I think that for your gasket problem for E90, it should be around $1.2k. I think for my E60 it should be about $1.6k. :( I'll probably have to get it done eventually.

On the engine oil issue. My engine oil evaporates quite fast too - approx after every 3000km. Wondering if this is the normal rate for everybody? Another question I have is on the idrive indicator - if the indicator drops a few bars, it should be ok to wait before topping up right? Someone told me that there will be a warning to top up the oil ( probably when the indicator bars drop all the way to the bottom).

I
the bars on your idrive show the top 1L of engine oil in your engine. so if it drops to the last bar, you've lost abt 1L of engine oil.
And yes, there will be warning to remind u to top up your engine oil :)

Re: engine oil... 0w40 and 5w40

Highbury, your engine oil consumption is still alright... mine is like 1L every 500km... ouch!! So the sponsor workshop changed the servomotor and also top gasket cover because the rubber all stiffened and old. I like that he showed me all the old parts that he removed (well, assuming those were really from my car). Anyway as expected bill came to $700+.

But this still doesn't resolve the engine oil problem. He suggests leaving the car with him 1 to 2 days to do check on the separator or filter to see if those are the problem... if not I guess its good bye to my first car ... and goodbye FOREVER to BMW!!! I tried calling PML after-sales this morning and I think government agencies' call centers are way customer friendlier than them!!!

Re: engine oil... 0w40 and 5w40

Whocares, thanks for your explanation.
Actually, in Dec my indicator was low so I topped up 1l of oil at the petrol station. The indicator didn't move so I added another 1l. It still didnt change but I left it. After driving for a while then the indicator showed full. So I had actually overtopped up by another 1l. I guess extra oil is not really an issue since nothing has happen in the last few months. Now my oil level starting to drop again. Sian!

Iken, 1l every 500km sound very serious. It's kinda like topping up oil every time you pump petrol. Hopefully the workshop can solve it without costing too much. Keep your fingers crossed.

Re: engine oil... 0w40 and 5w40

change to thicker oil. use 5w50 or 10w .
will make your car sluggish only if you 10w

Actually over filling of engine oil is harmful to your engine.

1. damage to certain seals and gaskets.
2. the surplus oil will be blown into the air intake manifold, from there it gets into the cylinders (together with the air), where it is burnt, damaging the catalytic converter

Re: engine oil... 0w40 and 5w40

Shucks!
The indicator bars didn't move up so I continued to add another 1l. The indicator bars only moved up after driving around for a while. When topping up at the petrol stationit looked ok and didn't overflow. Hopefully this wasn't too much. After about 4 months, now my oil level has started to drop again.

Would those problems you mentioned, surface immediately. So far I have not experienced any problems (knock wood). I hope my car is ok

Now I know. Just wait for the indicator bar to drop all the way (and also the warning), then just top up 1l.

Thanks.

How come once use 5W cannot go back to 0W? I mean why will the engine oil finish very fast?

Topping up engine oil is kinda different than topping up petrol. For petrol u can top up till the petrol oozes out of the filling hole but for engine oil, it's not the case. if u overfill engine oil till you can see it overflowing, now dat's a big problem.

The issues i mentioned above probably won't surface right away, the damage will only be apparent over time.

As for your indicator, every bar represents abt 250ml, so if u wanna top up b4 the warning comes on, just see how many bars have dropped and fill accordingly.

Happy motoring!

Ok. I think luckily for me, when topping up the engine oil didn't overflow out. I think there was still some empty space inside. I think that when it is full there is still some extra space left. Perhaps, in a perverted sense, it is good that the oil has been consumed and now the level is dropping again. :screwedu:

Thanks for your advice mate. Very helpful!

Re: engine oil... 0w40 and 5w40

The 0W part is more important in countries where the weather is cold but even in S'pore 0W has some advantages. When you first drive the car, the oil is thinner and lubricates better. However, the engine gets hot enough after 1-2 minutes so it doesn't matter much after that.
