Expansion Tank Woes....

Actually, I'm more in need to gripe than in need of help... as this is a well-documented problem starting close to a DECADE ago...

I am resigned to the fate that I have to change the expansion tank, the tank's thermostat or some other related piece of equipment for every post E36 Beemer I own. The problem occurred in my E46 318i and now it has happened to my E85. One would think BMW would have had the problem licked by now since it started way back with the E46 (or even earlier?).

But NO, it is still lurking, waiting to pounce on unsuspecting victims!

It was lucky that this time the problem occurred just as I drove out of the PML East Coast Centre so I was able to limp back to the centre after letting the engine cool off a bit. Still, I heard slight 'clackety-ing' just as I reached.... Ouch!!! Ironically, I had just bought a bottle of coolant (which was why I was there in the first place) because the coolant light had come on intermitently. I thought I was just running a wee bit low on coolant since the light had gone off just as soon as it came on. Happily on my way home with the coolant, the engine temp suddenly shot to the max with a loud warning 'BEEP' and, the rest is history...

So, be vigilant and not write off coolant warning lights as minor problems.... Grrrr.... :furious:

Hi !

May I know what is your car mileage?

Based on Piggyboy (Alan) write-up:
Cooling System
Expansion tank (80k lifespan apparently)

Expansion tank is not expensive but is the inconvenience caused :(

It's about 43k km right now. You are right - expansion tanks are exactly big-ticket items, but the inconvenience caused is irritating.

Also, while the expansion tank is not expensive, the damage that might stem from it's failure might cost a lot more. Esp if the engine seizes due to overheating.
