F1 new rulings

For those who know me better, i tend to get a bit more active (in the forum as well as every alternate weekends) when it comes to the F1 season. ;)

I haven't been in touch with all the new regulations and rulings for this season as they're constantly changing, so i thought it should be more or less finalised by now since Melbourne countdown is just 8 days away.

Many of the rulings i've heard and expected but rather surprised with this particular one:

"Tyres: One set of tyres must complete qualifying and the race.

Reason: a harder tyre will reduce cornering speeds."

More details here http://www.formula1.com/news/2367.html

Wow! That changes the pit strategy to a large extent! :screwedu: Pit stops would be mainly for re-fuelling purposes going forward, less variable, less drama, less pit crew (only lolipop man, 2 fuel-rig fellas, maybe 1 or 2 to clear air intake or peel of driver's visor strip?). Hmmm...

Nevertheless, i still very much look forward to the long-awaited brand new F1 season. Rule changes make the whole thing more eventful, unpredictable and exciting. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

2004 wasn't a good season for Williams BMW F1 team. I hope the less experienced Webber and Heidfeld can perform some wonders with the FW27 this season so i can chant my usual war-cry: "BMW Power RULES!!!"

Yeah! F1's back.

I think the matchup between Webber and Heidfeld in BMW-Williams is going to be intriguing. Heidfeld is the more experienced and a very competent driver. Webber seems more of a charger and does very well in qualifying. Looks like it'll be close. With Williams still chasing Button, looks like Heidfeld will have plently to prove this season. The new rules might suit Heidfeld since he's the smoother and more precise driver.

It'll be interesting to see how the different teams deal with new aero rules and find the loopholes to get back the speed. Have you seen those horns on Montoya's car? The new Ferrari F2005 also has some kind of winglet on the engine intake.....

I'm really a Montoya fan so, switching camps to support McLaren this year :)

Yohoo !!!!!!

Mark the date..... 03/03/05 !!!!

By the way, one tyre for one race.... That means lollipop man and the tyre crew is going to be damn free liao... More kooning time for them.... Effectively they may just need 1 team for the rear end team like Minardi and Jordan Team ?

What about the hoohaa on engine must last for 2 qualifier and 2 race ?

But 1 set of tyre for the entire race !!! That ould be interesting to see....

Hi all,

Me a F1 fan too. Would still root for BMW Williams (BMW Power!) though rather disappointed that Button wouldn't be in this year. Else it would be a more exciting season to watch.

The stuff I'm interested in this season would be how Montoya would perform in the mercs and whether Kimi can have a reliable car to chase Schumi's ass to the finish line.

I'd drove up to Sepang last year to experience the real stuff. Anyone going up there this year?

BTW, there's a roadshow infront of Shaw Center and there's a simulator running a sauber in Sepang circuit.

Created a new folder just for BMW F1.

Still in trial as im not sure how busy this folder will get.

Cheers!

Ryan, Cool thread for me...One tire rule should benefit drivers like Alonso and Coulthard....

Wats going to happen to my Takuma Sato i dare not think.. :shoot: :shoot:

Hi me going up there. Got the tickets for about 70 dollars odd.LEaving on the 18th Mar

no tyre change means they only need the refuelling crew? wat if there is a puncture? can they still do a pit stop and change tyres? :screwedu:

Thats the only official tyre change they allow. Only for the particular puncture tyre.

Hmm... if tats the case, then racing now becomes more challenging and difficult.

3/4 worn out tires and a tire puncture change. Wouldn't the tire setup & grip now becomes unbalance? Or they will change to a worn tire tat is almost the same to the 3 tires?

I believe that will be the race director call to make. Likely they would use a "run-in" tyre to replace the puncture one. One thing for sure, the new tyre for the F1 race will be very very hard compound compared to last yr ones.............Bridgestone will have a slight advantage here as their tyre are generally harder than the Mic..........

Cheers!

This year will hopefully be more interesting than last year and provide a more level playing field.

Based on results of testing so far, it seems that the F2004M no longer has the pace to match the newer and meaner machines, esp. from Renault and West McLaren.

Then again, the rules have been quite drastically revised, and I think we will see Ross Braun with a few tricks in his hat...

Can't wait for AU GP!!!! ;)

Good for ya! $70 bucks, must be on the uncovered hill? Well a few tips if you're new to Sepang F1:

1. It's gonna be HOT! (esp the weather I meant). There would be some exhibitions at the mainstand with racequeens, check it out.

2. Bring some cash if you wanna get BMW merchandise there. But the prices somewhat/mebbe slightly cheaper than PML's.

3. There's no aired commentaries. So it's kinda like a 'silent movie' compared to watching it on the TV. Mebbe you can bring a radio or port TV to catch/understand the action happening on the tracks which you can't see.

4. If you're driving and parking there, try to get a lot nearest to the exit point. There's definitely a major pile-up after the show. So it's faster to walk to your car which is at the exit than to get into a car that's in the end of the Queue.

5. The traffic back down to Sg is not a heavy as that going up to KL. Hence, no worries after exiting sepang.

Hope you'll enjoy your trip and mebbe post some pics here?

Cheers,
Derek

just curious, if the tyres are very hard, will it overheat when it is new? or will there be unequal thermal expansion/contraction due to presumably thicker tyres? lastly, is it possible to have run flat tyres for F1 so that they can at least limp back to the pit lane to change new tyres without spinning out of control/crashing at first? :screwedu:

PS: this is just my imagination and there's no technical backup at all. any bros can help clarify? :)

Can't answer all the questions but IMHO, i guess run-flat is not an option on an F1 car where light-weight is of essence... run-flats are too heavy to be justified for prevention of a punctured tyre which doesn't happen that often.
