Hi gurus,

Small brother here has some questions!
I know older cars sometimes uses higher ratings for engine oil.
So when i took over the car, the shop did a EO service and was using Mobile one 5w50
Wanna ask the gurus here, is this advisable for a 120k 10 year old car? lets say if i decided to go for 5w40, ok with that?

The fuel consumption is likely higher when you use 5W50. You may put 5W40 and monitor the engine oil level and see if it becomes lower.

Use whats recommended in the car manual. The thought of using a higher weight oil is for cars maybe 20+ years ago without vanos and variable timing. 90% of engine wear occurs on startup and a higher weight oil takes longer to be pumped around the engine hence speeding up the wear and damage. There is literally 0 benefits to running a higher weight oil vs whats recommended from the manual.

No i'm saying READ the manual.
It'll tell you EXACTLY what you need for YOUR specific ENGINE.

Don't go on a guess and ANYONES recommendation (unless that anyone happens to be the engineer who built your car) . Not even the workshop who will say yea that's just fine (90% of the time they have stock they just want to sell).

There's a reason why a certain weight of oil is REQUIRED as per the manual. Failure to comply can lead to engine failure or burning an excessive amount of engine oil in-between services.

Failure to read and understand what a modern engine requires has lead to multiple issues then people come out and say so many issues with BMW and whine and bitch about reliability.

Engine oil is cheap, engines are expensive. Correct knowledge is paramount esp if you want to keep the car for long.
