Understood from SE was 520i and 528i uses different turbo technology

My understanding is that all 5 series uses ZF 8HP45, it the same story for the new 3 series. The 7 series uses ZF 8HP70 which can take higher torque.

The interesting question is do we need to upgrade the inter-cooler when the ECU is power to 220+ Hp? Apparently, the BMW M Performance Power Kit beside boosting the power also upsize the inter-cooler unit. Does this give a higher horsepower & reliability?

Apparently there are two versions of the 20i n20 engine. One is 10.1:1 which is similar to 28i. Another is higher compression at 11.0.

Believed the engine is the same, just different way of tuning... Most likely the 528 has a much higher boost compared to 520.

Suspecting the inter-cooler in the 528 is bigger too. Hence, after-market Hp is still lower than factory tuned 528.

Yes! Thats the first thing PML told me... But u can opt for PML's M Power Performance Kit.

Don't think a slight difference in intercooler size can make such a big difference.

20i engine also has m performance kit?

Thinking between a 520 and 528, which is $26k difference. If it is something that a ECU remap can do to increse the boost and mapping, then don't need to spend the additional $26k. Of course some of the moola went to power tailgate, soft close doors, rear blind.... which I don't need.

Any bros here can advice?

I drive a different car but same engine so let me comment on that;

How I convinced myself to buy a 328i over a 320i is that if a 320i can chip up to become a 328i, the 328i should be able to do even better! :sneaky:

Like that might as well buy 335i, coz 335i can do even better...

Anyway the idea is that you buy a 20i engine, change the dme unit to a new one and load in 28i software. By then your 20i become 28i for only just 2-3k nia. From there can just tune up like any 28i engine.
