for mine 4 yrs old E46, i took it easy on the first 2000km, drove quite normally. once in a while give the car a full blast. so far everything is fine with my car.
for your FC it sounds pretty bad, unless you are stuck in traffic jams all the time or just floor it at every opportunity, it shouldnt be at those levels. i would normally check tires first, punctured tires eats up petrol. and since its a new car, sent it back to PML.

Bought my 525i (pre-LCI) at 6 months old and about 2,200km on the clock. Initial average consumption is around 7.5km/l. Took her to Penang once and recently to Kuantan-Cherating-Fraser's Hills-KL (both trips 3 adults, 2 kids plus boot full of bags). Now she has clocked 21,000km and is 13 months old. Done the first oil change at 12,000km. I alternate (in no particular pattern) between Shell 98 and Esso/Mobil 8000. My weekday driving is 60/40% expressway/city and weekend is 30/70%. Current average consumption is 8.6km/l and at full tank, the range shown on the dash is around 750km. Surprising thing is that long distance runs on the N-S did not really improve the consumption much. Another surprising thing is that my 525i is slightly more fuel efficient than my 159 2.2 manual (average 8.2km/l)!

Just an update on my fuel consumption (pre-LCI 525i). Mileage is now 34K+ km. I have switched from 17in stock rims with 225/50 Goodyear NCT5 RFT to 19in forged rims with 245/35 front, 275/30 rear Goodyear F1 Asymmetric - estimated weight saving of 3-4kg per corner. Also have been using V-power for the last 2 mths and driving pattern is 30/70 city/highway for weekdays and 70/30 for weekends. Fuel consumption has improved to 9.3-9.5km/l.
