but the cabin looks quite ok with such an impact! i believe the driver still got his legs.

Re: First Civic Type R (JDM) crash in Malaysia NSH

They should be OK. Provided there was no cabin intrusion, driver and passenger should be able to walk away from this one. The crumpled front end is simply structural deformation, as intended by the car maker. Not bad considering the force of the smash seems to have been absorbed mostly by the passenger side of the car. Which may explain why the driver's airbag did not deploy.

Someone who knows Civics better than I do should correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the "cracked engine block" simply a broken cover or hood for the engine? The car should be in far worse shape if the force of the crash was enough to break the block.

Re: First Civic Type R (JDM) crash in Malaysia NSH

yes perhaps it's merely the engine block cover (plastic) just like my ody

Re: First Civic Type R (JDM) crash in Malaysia NSH

mmmm actually, it looked like the car stood up to the impact really well.... protected the occupants very well, the cabin not much intrusion at all... fab

looked like a spinout + crazy smash

Re: First Civic Type R (JDM) crash in Malaysia NSH

The front of the Civic might be all squashed at least the block seems to have stayed in the engine bay. I've always wondered what would happen to my 330i in big front end shunt - could the in-line 6 be pushed through the fire wall into the cabin? It would be the stuff of nightmares if that were to happen.

wasted the honda..i think the ppl driving it is fine..maybe it was parked and it got hit..so nobody inside.so no blood?

Re: First Civic Type R (JDM) crash in Malaysia NSH

That's one good thing about having red carpet. No need to wipe up the blood after the accident!

Re: First Civic Type R (JDM) crash in Malaysia NSH

yup i think the dmage looks bad front n back..but the passenger cell suffered small deformations considering the damages u see from the front. good car!

IIRC the airbag won't fire if the seat belt is not strapped.

I think the I6 engine will slide UNDER the cabin, breaking the driveshaft (absorb some more impact)

Well, that's reassuring. I've looked at the big in-line 6 many times before and it always seemed uncomfortably close to the fire wall.

Re: First Civic Type R (JDM) crash in Malaysia NSH

I'm definitely not the definitive authority when it comes to this though. I can quote no reference but I read before that the chassis mounts will buckle to slant the engine downwards and backwards during an impact, and further pressure will force the block downwards and backwards.

I thought the rationale behind airbag was that for Americans who refuse to strap in and oppose safety belt regulations, they would be better off with an airbag.

Re: First Civic Type R (JDM) crash in Malaysia NSH

The airbag's known as a SRS, so it's supposed to complement the seat belt.

Or maybe it will still fire, if the sensors under the seat detects a humanoid weight? Hhm.

Yes bro, the cracked portion is actually the plastic cover for the intake manifold. Engine should still be fine. K-Series Engine ya:)
