I forgot to release the handbrake today and drove for a good 10km then I realized it. What would be the consequences?

Hi. Driving with the hand brake on may "eat" the metal brake disk as well as the braking feets ( two metal parts around the disk). It may cost you good about of money but it your breaking system did not affect so try to be careful next time. Better check the disk by a mechanic

Re: Forgot to release handbrake when driving for auto transmission F30

It is possible to run a distance without knowing that yur parking brake is not release. As most of the owner will only pull up afew clicks which is just enough to hold the vehicle during parking. ( I always pull 5-6clicks at N gear)

Rear brake shoe (which is inside the rear wheel hub area) life span will be reduce & ofcos burnt smell will be there. Have a check with yur workshop & see if needed to replaced e brake shoe, any damage on e drum section.

Parking yur vehicle without engaging the hand brake may cause parking sensor, P locking arm to be damage. Hand brake is there for a reason. IMHO :)

** PS, the warming sound is an indication to pre amp the driver. I would have stop & check wat is wrong. Perhaps im just too anal.

Cheers ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Re: Forgot to release handbrake when driving for auto transmission F30

Just check with SA, the handbrake locks the rear wheel brakes, driving with handbrake engage will cause wear and tear of the brake pads and brake rotors to be faster. Prolong deriving with it will damage the wheels if the brake pads gets overheated and stick to the rotors.

Thanks all bros for your advices!!

Come... I give you a picture that tells a thousand words...

pic09.jpg

The parking brakes are in the rear BUT NOT the same as your rear braking system (calipers + rotors). What you see in the pic is after the BBK and rotors have been removed, exposing the parking brake shoes.

"The parking brake is a drum system that is integrated into the rear brakes. The rear rotor hub flange acts as the drum and the brake shoes are mounted to the backing plate."

As far as I can find, this applies to all 3s including E90s and early F30s ie. 335i. Do correct me if things have changed in the later F30s.
