Front Right Rims Searing HOT!!!

Hi guys..today i went to pump air into my tyres at the petrol station...upon finishing the other 3 tyres, i got to the front right tyre of the car...as usual i proceeded to unscrew the valve cap and BOY did i get burnt!!!

the whole rim was searing hot and it was emitting some serious heat...i still couldn't open the cap even after getting some cloth as insulation so decided to leave it for tomorrow and ask around first. funny thing was...the other 3 rims were close to cool...and im not sure if the rim got hot from

1. the engine's heat
2. the tyres (which were quite hot but perfectly ok to touch)
3. the brakes

overall, that whole area of the car was dissipating heat and just standing there i could feel it...some slight smell too but not exactly sure what smell it is...hoping some of you could advise me on this problem...by the way i did strike the curb on that wheel 2 weeks ago but other than the usual rash on the rims there wasn't any visible problem...

could it be the wheel alignment/balance problem? or did the bump cause my brakes to run out of alignment and rub somehow..? HELP! many thanks in advance...

Re: Front Right Rims Searing HOT!!!

Hi kurqa,

get your brake calipers checked. It could be jammed and your brake pad rubbing on your disc. Happened to me...

Re: Front Right Rims Searing HOT!!!

u hv a serious brake problem..the only way u get heat onto the rim is from the brakes.

Re: Front Right Rims Searing HOT!!!

caesar & toto>> thanks for the advise...i will go and get them checked soon...you dont suppose it could be other than the brakes right??

anyway i touched the rims this afternoon in the hot weather after some driving and surprisingly the problem wheel was quite hot but touchable and not burning..strange how its less hot in the day than on a cool night like last night...

Re: Front Right Rims Searing HOT!!!

there is no other way ur rim can get hot. heat from engine wun get there...heat rises...ur bonnet will burn b4 ur rim if its heat from engine. its likely a caliper issue.

Re: Front Right Rims Searing HOT!!!

The wheel hub helps transfer heat from the scorching brake discs to your rims to dissipate some of the heat buildup

But left and right should be nearly equally hot, so if one side is much hotter than the other, it could be a case of jammed caliper like some of the previous replies have mentioned.. get it checked with your servicing shop

Re: Front Right Rims Searing HOT!!!

i very sure it's brake problem, it just happened to my e36 too, the rotor was displaying some lines of red which the mechanic pointed out to me.

the brake calipers or pads or rotors might need to change.

replacing the front brake pads plus the some other related stuff like 'calipers' i think and other stuff set me back by about 500bux!

Re: Front Right Rims Searing HOT!!!

thanks guys i sent the car in today and he said it was the brake problem...most likely the calipers jammed...apparently the rotors one the problem wheel were full of black marks and that somehow indicates that the brakes were burning...waiting for the verdict now

thanks to all who have contributed...appreciate it...
