"Fuel Consumption" upon Engine Start

Hope bros can help advise. Txs.

I noted that a fair bit of fuel (abt 10km worth) is being consumed whenever I start my car. (eg. remaining mileage b4 i turn off engine is 400km, then when I turn on engine several hours lata, mileage falls to 390km).

My Oct 2009 525 is getting abt 6.8km per litre. Isit common?
Anyway to improve FC to abt 8/9km per litre?

You mean you start the engine with 400km, leave the engine running for several hours idling, then when you turn it off your remaining trip distance shows 390km? It's very good. Cos your FC is 0km/liter for a few hours, by law of averages your FC should be way below 390km.

By the way, were you running the engine idling for several hours in the night when air is cooler? Day time confirm cannot get such good FC. Location also counts, if near forested areas, hearsay there is more oxygen and hence FC improves.

(eg. remaining mileage b4 i turn off engine is 400km, then when I turn on engine several hours lata, mileage falls to 390km). - if the engine consume abt 10km worth of fuel whenever u start your car... then switch on, switch off your engine 10x and you will lose 100km worth, correct? Use some common sense will you...

Anyway to improve FC to abt 8/9km per litre? - Best and FOC way to improve FC is (1) Remove excess weight in your ride (2) the discipline of your right foot.
I only can do this  Anyway my inputs r in red above.

Also the issue of 400km, 390km and difference of 10km is basically this - there's pressure inside your gasoline tank where measurement is just an estimate. In fact, after long periods and you start the engine, the reading is more accurate than when vehicle is on the move or after a long drive.

I had Subway today!

Re: "Fuel Consumption" upon Engine Start

Average speed is a factor used in the calc for the FC. Get that up and your FC numbers will improve.

Which is kind of an oxymoron because you would need to drive quite a bit to move that number which burns more fuel.

Ignore the FC. It's a stupid number on your dash.

My car is getting about 6.8km/ltr most of the time when I am driving alone. But during this long weekend holiday, I got about 10km/ltr. Very smooth traffic and a watchful wife beside me and children on board helps lower FC. If I am heavy on my right foot, my FC goes up to 5km/ltr. Interestingly, when I raced with a supercharged turbo Brabus E250AMG with M-sticker, my FC remains at 6.8km/ltr... dunno why.

Sori for the confusion & txs for all the interesting comments.

Thot I made it clear abt the dropped in mileage.... IE. car has 400km worth of fuels to go b4 top up needed. I switched off engine. Several hours lata. I turn on engine. Car is left with 390km worth of fuels.... So, guess baby1m is right that the drop is due to pressure in gas tank.
