Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

Good basic GPS with navigation.

Battery lasts easily 3-4 hrs, screen is clear even in bright sunlight.

I got one for my wife, and no regrets.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

i have nuvi 650i

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

cool.

anyone has any idea how much it cost now in the market?

Cos i have a friend who wants to sell me a Europe imported, model, which he used for 2 mths, due to upgrades to better gps.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

Garmin nuvi 200 w/o maps should be under S$400.

Highly recommend the malsingmaps, which is community supported. Use it and contribute.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

Yea...sounds cool, checked out their webbie too.

Thanks...

Any feedback on Nuvi 200?

Btw, can it view videos or pictures?

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

I think i am the only person with negative feedbacks on the nuvi 200... It performs fine in Singapore, almost... But its horrible in Kuala Lumpur. It takes forever to locate the satelite during hari raya... My friend cracked a joke saying that the GPS is on holiday lah, not working...

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

hi, i'm using the Nuvi 660 which i kind of regret getting. End up paying for a lot of functions i don't need.. While Nuvi 200 is a great set, i would encourage you to go for Nuvi 200W because the 4.3" widescreen definitely looks much better.

The major difference in GPS functions between the "higher end" 6XX series and 2XX series is that the 6XX series speaks street names, while the 2XX series will give you directions without the street names

Nuvi 6XX : "In 400m, turn left at Jalan Besar"
Nuvi 2XX: " In 400m, turn left"

Text-To-Speech (TTS) might sound good to you if you are using it in a english speaking country with english language road signs. However, in singapore, the pronounciation is pretty bad.. The nuvi practically cannot pronouce malay street names accurately.. so just ignore the feature and go for a solid Nuvi 200W.

Other differences are negligible and not important at all if you are looking for a pure GPS navigator:
1) FM transmitter
2) Bluetooth handsfree
3) 3.5mm audio out
4) MP3 player

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

the nuvi 200 is NOT the GPS to get. Without the SirfStar3 chip, its lockon is slow. The Nuvi 300 is the true entry level GPS for Garmin. Avoid the nuvi 200.

The magic of the sirfstar3 is speed of lockon and sustainability of signal. The 200 is far lesser in that respect. The price difference is small.

And remember always, bigger is now almost always not better. Smaller screen gives you better battery life if you're not connected to a lighter circuit. And smaller GPS screen always means more viewing area.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

I had to get to the bottom of this...

There are three chipset manufacturers for Garmin Nuvi 200;
check your GPS firmware, the last letter will indicate whether you have Sirf, Bravo or MediaTek.

GPS Firmware
2.10m - MediaTek
2.10b - Bravo (native garmin)
2.90s - Sirf III

The latest version for Sirf is 3.00s.

BTW, Nuvi 300 is an older design compared to Nuvi 200. FYI.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

emiffy really detailed explanation and links, thanks for the effort

all: i have decided to look around furthur, thanks for e input, well maybe can continue with the inputs, since the GPS craze is hitting us.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

Not entirely true... not all Nuvi 6XX speak street names.

I have a Nuvi 610 and it does not. To speak street names, get TTS function called Text to Speech.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

Thanks emiffy. you've made this page the definitive reference guide for nuvi200 conundrum...!

my experience with the nuvi 200 MTK mediatek for deflected signal shenton way situations has been poor. I have never tried Bravo. nuvi 300 Sirf3 does not lose signal no matter what.

Yes the 300 series is an older design but it has served greatly, except for somewhat short batt life.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

Battery life is not really an issue. Just hardwire it to your car.

Total cost was RM2.50 for a cigarette lighter adapter and RM5 for labour.

It's better cos when you start your car, it turns on automatically and when you off the car, it switches off in 30 secs. Perfect.

And looks so much neater. I would recommend to go for the widescreen anyday.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

1) My 2 cigarette lighter socket really far from my right mount
2) My car when off cigarette lighter still on. Which makes sense since most of us don't smoke in the car wanna get out smoke and why must start car to light cigarette? This is a GREEN feature in my car :)
3) The Garmins all come with cigarette lighter adapter already, quite high tech one with USB identification...

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

I happened to use the nuvi 200 last week in penang. I must say that i am pretty impressed with it. it is a basic set w/o any frills but took away all the stress when driving oversea without having to worry about getting lost.

I used it in sg and it even prompt redlight cameras which would be quite useful esp if u r new to the area.

Good basic set to purchase :)

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

buy them off ebay. now they cost US$160 with US maps even with shipping it is cheaper than locally available sets. You can try Amazon+VPOST it is more expensive thru Vpost.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 200..any comments?

Widescreen is good, more to see. For the price of a 200, you might as well get a 250W. It is newer than 200, slimmer and has widescreen. I have one & like it a lot. Only down side is that sometimes it takes a while to find satellite when first come out of car park.
