Garmin portable friction mount aka dashboard beanbag

Does anyone here use the above mentioned product, or perhaps a third party version in their car? I'm wondering if it's possible to use it or modify it slightly so i can place other things on it. Eg mobile phones, or wireless tpms monitors like the tyre dog one.

I dont like those adhesive device mounts, and i never did trust the windscreen suction style mounts.

Thanks

Re: Garmin portable friction mount aka dashboard beanbag

Never trusted the windscreen sucker types?

They're the most stable sorts IMO. The beanbag goes flying everywhere if you drive hard. I've never had an issue with the sucker mounts.

Be sure you get the ones made in Germany though. Those are quality.

Re: Garmin portable friction mount aka dashboard beanbag

my sucker mount drops every so often now after 2 years usage...

new one is fine...

the garmin bean mount is good actually...stays even on hard corners...just feel its too big of a bulk...

the old design mount u can get for 35bucks from someone here...

saw the new slim one at perfect watch...asking for 75...

Re: Garmin portable friction mount aka dashboard beanbag

Ryan- thanks for the tip. I guess i always think the mount will drop off after a while, especially if the glass gets hot. I almost never park outdoors, but still worries me. But maybe i'll check out the better ones, do you have a brand in mind when you mentioned the german made ones?

Pilotsnoopy- thanks for the store name. Do you use the bean bag already? I was wondering if the plastic base where the arm is mounted can be removed, so i can place my device on the bag itself. None of the photos i saw online indicate if the plastic plate can be removed. Appreciate any info you might have.

I'm tempted to chuck the device in the cubby hole below my parking brake and secure with some blutack. Or maybe get the M2 mount online. But the adhesive portion hopefully doesn't discolour the dash

Re: Garmin portable friction mount aka dashboard beanbag

there is a tab/clip where you can remove the stand but doubt you have any thing that can fit into it...

Re: Garmin portable friction mount aka dashboard beanbag

I have the Garmin 'beanbag' thing and it's really stable and doesn't move around even when I negotiate tight corners, etc.

I bought mine when I was using my Garmin in the US since California law doesn't allow anything to be mounted on the windscreen.

The good thing about the beanbag is that you can quickly remove all traces of a GPS unit by chucking the whole thing under your seat. This will deter thefts, as GPS thefts are quite common everywhere.

Re: Garmin portable friction mount aka dashboard beanbag

But Garmin is imprinted clearly on the bean bag... "an eyesore" .

I both those silicone mouse pad with gel rest! Best it is equally removal, non reflective, and can hold both the suction for Garmin and even a car camera on it...

the garmin beanbag can take .75G of cornering force after that it flies if you mount something like the 276C on it. Take note while spirited driving.

thanks to all for the invaluable advice & feedback.

yeah, it does look smal, but was hoping i could secure at least my tpms receiver. but that might fly right out of the bean bag.. is it all fabric underneath the plastic base?

ya, i was thinking of ordering a Jelly Sticky Pad, but some users said it collects dust v easily.

Think i'm gonna try some blutack for a while, and stick it near the gear stick portion. or maybe order an adhesive universal mount. but will make sure it uses good quality adhesive so it won;t leave a mark on the dash

Re: Garmin portable friction mount aka dashboard beanbag

yea all fabric...

a forummer ordered off ebay some mount that sticks into the aircon vent...don't think blu-tack is a good idea...

oh, but i'm just laying the tpms receiver flat and securing with blutack. Which is pretty ghetto... But at least the buttons are within reach when i stop at a light. And i don't intend to leave it in the car long, so i'll see how long it works.

Was thinking if i could use the bean bag as a base for the adhesive device stand, but fabric prob will not allow it to stick. Will try my temp method for now and look around for other solutions. Thanks alot for the info on the bean bag

Re: Garmin portable friction mount aka dashboard beanbag

beware the garmin beanbag....

I had a 255W mounted on top of it and it flew off the dash after hard braking or acceleration from a traffic light stop. I am on an E46 320 with stock brakes so we are not talking about a great deal of braking or acceleration power here.

It does not occur frequently but it has happened a few times, which is more than what I would accept.

Caught me totally by surprise and really distracted me for a good few seconds.

Would suggest you go for safer alternatives to mount a garmin gps.

Alvin.
