Gearbox - do all of them fail at some point?

Hi guys and gals, is there any way to check the health of the gearbox of my 2008 320i e90?

It's coming to 7 years and would like to know what's the possibility of the gearbox working well all the way to year 10th (end of COE). Will the gearbox give way anytime soon? Right now it's working perfectly :)

my 07/2005 gear box was fine all the way till i scrapped the car at 125k km. i changed transmission oil twice though. once foc at pml (cos i kept complaining the downshift from 2 to 1 was jerky) & another time at r2d.

i drive quite sedately but do redline occasionally.

To summarise the 2 respond above, i think the lifespan of the GB depends on ;
1) How you drive it
2) How much you drive
3) How frequent you change ATF

To minimise wear and tear of gear box I leave it in D mode even if i have to wait for more than 5 min, then switch of car in N and then shift gear to P to release key, by doing this you are preventing unecessary wear (shift from D to N to R then to P).make it a habit bimmers.

I'm at 155k km now. I don't drive aggressively. Change ATF every 40k. So far gear shifts are still good, no issues at all. I guess I'm just lucky.

Wondering if there's a way to check for failing gearbox - is there a machine or something like that?

Only proper way to check is to open up the gearbox. At 155k km, you haven't changed clutch?

Plug it into an autologic unit or computer, there are 2 specific values that can be read off the box, to give an idea the gearbox clutch and solenoid wear condition.

Do Check with us for your Gearbox needs ! ATF, Solenoid valves, Filters, clutch pad kits and Mechatronics, we have it all ! Do give us a call / PM

I just changed my solenoid valves last Dec and I again facing the problem of 'Jerk' when I brake to stop but this Jerk feel is different from faulty solenoid valve. My mechanic told me maybe is valve body.. any further kind advice here?

Like what Bro Canuck said ... Have a laptop look at the stats in the gearbox.

The solenoid is a hydro electrical signal converter. The valvebody contains all the sensors e.g output shaft or turbine speed etc. The clutches does the actual mechanical work. There is a bunch of seals that keeps the pressure going. Finally there is also the software.

The idea is to determine which one is giving the problem. Should not be guessing which one .....

My gearbox jerks thru the gear when braking .....
I guess something big going up lorry soon.

I noticed my car tend to roll back slope nowadays, eg in & out of multi sty carparks.
Used to be able to remain stationary after I take my foot of the brakes.

And when I engage reverse gear on an upslope, the car will take abt 1-2sec to 'engage' to reverse up after I shift my gear to R.
Is this a sign of clutch wear?
My millege is about 128K.

actually worn gearbox is no big issue if your model has a repair kit to reconditioned it...u might wanna try those gearbox specialists workshop for luck...2 cents

Service parts such as clutch pads etc for ZF Gearboxes are available, the same cant be said for GM gearboxes

Meaning there's no clutch pad replacement for GM gearbox?
So got to change gearbox if there's any problem?

What happens if you engage D, step on the brake (left foot) and accelerate to 1.5k rpm (right foot) ?

The car tries to move forward, with some 'knock knock' sound occasionally from the brakes trying to hold the car.
But the car does not move forward.
That should be normal right?
