Re: Gearbox problem

Gearbox gonna up lorry soon
Solenoids, valve body overhaul and/or clutch plates overhaul possibly required depending on your gearbox values readout
Check the other gearbox problem threads in bmw 3 series E9x threads

Quick update.

I bite the bullet and slowly drove up north to WCA. I was so afraid my car would break down halfway. But in the end, it was all worth it. The problem was diagnosed to be the ignition coil problem and not the dreadful gearbox problem. so damn relieved. I thought i'm gg to spend more than RM$6k to overhaul my gearbox but end up i spend much lesser to only replace the 4 ignition coil. I feel my pick up more responsive and overall the drive turns out better than normal!

I also saved on the diagnostic cost which should be ard $80sgd.

Re: Gearbox problem

This is strange, your gearbox hard jerk and difficulty engaging gearbox could be related to bad coils - since engine is misfiring.

The gearbox error sign and switching to manual mode shouldn't be related to coil problem.

Glad all is well given Francis would have scan your car codes and done the necessary for your car.

Glad u r ok!
By the way u can tow ur car from SG to WCA if needed.
I would recommend try not to drive and risk break down at causeway which will incurred more cost to u.

Yes who would have tot it's all due to ignition coil. I described my problem over the phone to Francis and he can tell that it's the coil problem and not the gearbox! Clap clap!

He told me still can drive that's why I dare to drive up.

End up I only replaced 4 coils. Heng ar. If it's really gearbox it could have been at least $6k to overhaul.

Ya... I am impressed he can guess the problem over a phone call.

Gearbox problem

You have to be mentally prepared for more repair bills down the road as E90 can be quite heavy on wear and tear esp if you just taken over this ride.

Even for those that keep to strict maintenance schedule and preventative replacement, some repairs are unavoidable on and off.

Small problems can fix in Singapore WS. Bigger repairs may be worth it to bring up North. Keep a few good WS in hand to maintain this baby in good running condition.

Yes I totally agree with you. This is not the first time I've been to wca for repairs. Prob 5-6 times already. :(

OMG ..... Over the phone diagnosis ...... Francis is psychic.

Is this the beginning of the end for non-psychic workshops ?

Re: Gearbox problem

this happened recently to me,
driving on the highway nearing my office and suddenly the engine overheat amber lights came out.
reduced speed, kept to the left and exited highway and slowly make my way towards office in eunos.
when was about to reach, the engine overheat red light came out and shortly after; the battery discharged light came on too.
thinking this time up lorry liao, so park one side and called a local workshop and told him what happened.
as Im pretty near the workshop in paya ubi, he told me to rest the car for awhile and let the engine cool off.
after that, drive slowly to his workshop.
it must be the belt that has broke, he said.
true enough, I popped the bonnet open and I can see the broken belt.

after resting drove slowly to the workshop.
when I reached, the belt; pulley and tensioner has already arrived and is waiting for me.

they chop chop changed the parts and im out in 30mins.

I ask the boss how did he know the belt is broken when I describe it over the phone, the answer was that he have heard of it numerous time.
belt broke, that y engine start to overheat,
as the belt is connected to the alternator, therefore the battery discharged light will follow soon after.

Another thing I forgot to mention. Some ws charged $80 bucks just to pluck in laptop and do a diagnosis. Omg. So far I was never charged by wca for diagnosis. Maybe I shouldn't compare apple to orange. But the fact that local workshops always try to reap us off irks me.
