Wait till you see:Racebred said:Killing animals for anything other than food is not correct either; fur, tusks, bile, etc.

Like many here, I still eat them and if they're served to me, I will savour it. But to order it, that's a big no-no. Firstly, it's basic demand and supply.
I think Racebred did a very good summary of what's going on in my head except that now whenever I see his nick, I'll think of SM Yuen's wife's music video. I digress.
It is the way the fins are being harvested and in the process, the sharks and dolphins are all left to bleed and die. I'm not a vegan but I believe we all have some compassion in us to not force them to extinction. If animals are bred to be eaten, then I'd say, feel free. But if it is a wild and free ranging animal, I would say please leave it alone but if you still want to kill it, I wouldn't judge. But animals on the brink of extinction and in this case, a significant predator of the ocean and losing them will mean incredible eco imbalance, please have the heart and have our kids grow up in an environment where sharks' aren't cassified together with dinosaurs and dodobirds.
* I would love to hunt the video of how fishermen harvest the sharks and let the sharks bleed to death and the wailing of dolphins when they're being trapped in nets used to harvest these sharks but can someone help? I'm technically challenged...
There are few angles to the argument:Racebred said:killing horses for food i think is fine, they are not going to be extinct soon and if the killing is not cruel, why not. Besides, you can have an extra pot of glue at the end of it. A horse's life is not anymore precious than a chicken's. (in the same regard, I have no problems with people eating dog's meat but personally I have no desire to try it)
Also, if sharks are not cruelly killed, and are not going to be extinct, I'll have totally no qualms ordering sharks fin soup, but at least not be wasteful and harvest the rest of the sharks' meat too. A shark's life is not any more precious than an ikan bilis, but the current situation warrents people to stop supporting the trade.
If one day suddenly chickens are going to go extinct, I will stop eating them. If I also have the knowledge that say some supermarkets or fast food chains are selling chickens cruelly reared, I'll stop going to them too.
Everyone has a choice, it's a personal philosophy. It may or may not make a difference. And only collective thought and action can cause changes to a current ill-desired situation. Many times, people do not feel the direct pain of the social cost of their actions, but others do. In the shark's case, if they become extinct, the ecosystem is affected. In a very indirect way if people's seafood supply is affected, they will also not attribute it to what they have done. That's what characterises us humans; we're just inherently destructive to our own homes.
I'm not sure about this, but the leather that we use in our everyday products, do they come from the skins of cows that are killed for food?

Vegetarian will spare all animals from being slaughtered for food.

At least I am not pretending to show shark-conscience and then try to impress my friends on Facebook with photos of foie gras tasted from an upmarket restaurant, or lament that baby sharks are so cute but chew crispy pieces of roasted suckling pigs, or talk about animal cruelty but insist on eating live fish and fresh sashimi or even watch the part of the fish swimming while eating its flesh.....
It is always the "Chinese" thingy when it comes to food that faces objection, be it turtle soup or sharks'fins.
I am confused by what is to be eaten and what not, by some of these "critics."For instance, why are game animals edible? Kangaroos, deers, wild boars and even ostrich? We do not have enuff beef?
No one complains about foie gras.
