Guys,

Have this very irritating issue with my ride now. there is this intermitten problem on my instrument cluster. The ABS and center LCD display which shows the milege and outside temp will go blank for a few sec then come back on. At the same time, if the head light is on, it would dim. Could it be the alternator?

I am driving a 523i 1997 E39

Any idea? Cheers!!!!

Re: help!!!!

hey i've got the exact same prob...
cept i just changed a new alternator....

Dude,

After the alternator change no diff ? Does the problem still persist?

Re: help!!!!

Hi there, get your mechanic to check the charging, suspect the voltage regulartor is gone.
Thats the cheaper alernative than the complete alternator, unless the alternator is found faulty.

Hope this help.

Guys,

Check with the mech just now. Alternator ok. batt ok. he suspects that it is the wiring for the angle eyes which another mech did for me. he has disconnected the angle eyes. The problem normally happens when my lights are on.

Will update you guys.

Re: help!!!!

Hi there, yes voltage regulator is there to regulate charging from the alternator.
Quite commom it need replacing after some years of usage.

Heard the angle light is causing the flickering in your cluster problem.
They could have tapped the wrong source supply that caused the dipped in the lighting function.
Get a re-route could help....:)

bhp,

any idea what is the proper wiring route for an after market angle eyes for a 1997 E39? Seems that the earler mech bridged the power from the main head light.

Any comment on the correct wiring source for this mod?

Re: help!!!!

my understanding's tt the power source for the AE's from the main headlights as well..

n bout the flickering odometer digits, i've got my mechanic to check them out as well...
seems like a faulty light switch that's causing the prob for me....

The light swithc you are referring to is the main head light switch or the spot light switch?

Did it help after you changed the switch?
