Hot Air from Rear Vent of E39

Hi, I am driving a 2002 E39 520. The air con is working perfectly. However, I experience hot air coming out of rear vents after driving car for a period of time. I noticed that the centre part of the car below the dashboard gets pretty hot. Subsequently, if I start my car after I parked, gear-box jerks very badly when it changes gear. This usually goes away once the car is sufficiently cooled down after a drive. Does anyone have any idea what is happening here? Performance SA asked me to turn the air con colder to cool down the hot air from the rear vent.

I dun have such a problem (touchwood!) but the rear air-con vent has its own temp control by way of a dial. Did u turn your all the way towards the blue colour side?

Re: Hot Air from Rear Vent of E39

Hi T6, Thanks for your response. I have tried the dial and doesn't seem to work. How's your 530? Must be a blast to drive! I will keep trying to find the cause of the problem in my car. You think BVO can help diagnose?

Haha, IF I have a 530i, it will indeed be a blast to drive. But I am driving a 525i. It is a cruiser.

BVO might be able to figure out the problem. U can always give them a shot first and if they can't solve the problem, then head to an air-con specialist. :)

I also have this problem with my E39. No clue what happened though...

try turning the thermostat left toward the blue zone.

Re: Hot Air from Rear Vent of E39

Hi T6, 525 is still a nice car to drive. nice point between 520 and 530. On Singapore roads, probably the best value too! I will probably have to check with BVO to see if they can help.

Hi Gizmo and marko-polo, I have been keeping the temperature a little on the low side (about 20degrees) and this seems to be causing less heat build up in the centre tunnel. The jerking has been held at bay. However, I feel this is avoiding the problem rather than solving it. Like Gizmo says, still no idea what is going on! ;-) Also means car is cold all the time ... brrrrr .....

if yours is a basic model e39 520i with manual seats and aircon control dials, its normal.

Russo,

Just curious. What is the reason and explanation for that? Tks.

Re: Hot Air from Rear Vent of E39

Hi Russo, thanks for response. Mine is the basic model with manual aircon.

There are two separate problems here and I should have been more explicit.

Firstly, there is the aircon problem and then there is the jerky gearbox that seems to happen whenever the car has been driven and then left parked for a while. Typically the gearbox jerks when the car park is hot or it is a hot day.

I can understand if the aircon is hot but as T6 asked, what causes it? Is this related in any way to the jerky gearbox. I have established that after being driven, even with the aircon at 18 degrees, the gearbox may still jerk. It disappears after being driven for a while. But the change in gear is so bad, it always want to makes me want to sell the car and get a lexus! But driving the car when the gearbox is behaving always makes me change my mind!

I am just not enjoying this love-hate relationship with the car! Ahhhhh ........!!!! Help .......!!!!!
