No. We ran a small poultry farm yonks ago. Honestly, I can't even remember the exact place we were in, but I'd always & forever remember the smell. Then, the government reacquired the land & kicked all of us out, with very little compensation - though they did give us a small HDB flat as a replacement for demolishing our home. All of the adults were suddenly out of work, and had to look for employment elsewhere.

Those were very difficult times. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who's old enough here to remember something of a similar whenever land acquisition took place (back then).

Please don't blame the polytechnics. plenty of poly grads come out fine. blame the parents for his upbringing. anyway i am more peasant then u all.

At the rate COE and home prices are going up, we and/or our our future generations may have no option other than to take MRT and live in shoebox apartments in the future. We (most of us) are all doomed to peasantry

Anyway it is not necessary to drive all the time. It is sometimes better to walk, take MRT or take bus when it is convenient to do so. This will keep us prepared to face the uncertain future, when say COE cost $1m :O

Both parents and school play a part in shaping a person.........especially primary/secondary level...

i would say parents should have the stronger responsibility and not just throw it to the school and then blame the school when their kids turn out to be social retards

Can't help feeling what he said is true to some extent.. at least to the minds of the elitists which are aplenty in Spore. So how did we turn out to be so myopic and elitist-thinking? Not necessary due to upbringing which the media is quick to push the blame to (similar to the JC student scolding DPM to FO).

Upbringing is a singular attribute. True it plays a pivotal part but our upbringing is also shaped by our perception of society and society's perception of us aka peer pressure.

Some examples to expand these cases. Who once said if you are a taxi driver, your kids will most likely be a low class peasant and can't go to university? Who once said Sporean kids are rote-learning in school and lack of entrepreneurship so we have to import brighter kids of china cities and give them free education here? Who once turns away a sporean-looking guest at an ang moh restaurant, only to admit another ang moh? How many sporean gals you speak to aspire to marry Andrew Fowleys? Who ostracize kids who went to ITE oppose those who went to RI? Who isn't constantly comparing what cars they drive, how much they make and where they live?

My point here is we are all shaped by the society. Everyone wants to jump on this bandwagon of progress so that they can be as elite as the top guys up there. This guy here is just more desperate and more dumb to air his views in an insensitive remark. But his motives and aspirations to succeed are no different from the rest of us.

Actually, my motives & aspirations to succeed were somewhat different from Mr. Nicholas hyphen Seth. He wanted to join the elites, I just wanted to escape the life that fate handed my family. Whether or not I became an 'elite' (by whatever fcuked up definition that our garhmen/society comes up with) was irrelevant. I just never wanted to ever feel the insecurity my parents & extended family felt when their whole lives collapsed with the loss of our livelihood.

That's very different from pretending to be someone I'm not (ie elite). You can take the boy out of the farm, but you will never take the farm out of the boy, heheh.

On a recent SQ flight from HK to SG, a Sg couple boarded the plane with 2 packed-until-going-to-explode backpacks and carried 5 plastic/paper bags of stuff and proceeded to take up fully TWO overhead compartments and depriving others from using. When other pax complained to the cabin crew, who asked the couple to move their stuff to the back, this SG couple kicked up a fuss, said they were paying passengers and tat they have a right to use ALL compartments if they wanted and where's the law tat says they need to move their stuff to the back..
