How often does the rotor require replacement?

Re: How often does the rotor require replacement?

Wow ok thanks for the info. I used to have shops tell me skim the disc can liao. !@#!@$!@#

I changed in PML and BVO. Both told me same thing, "rotor worn"..... was told that for stock pads and rotors, they wear each other out to achieve better braking effect....

How much does it cost to change a pair of rotor and brakes?

I was told by PML when I sent in my car for servicing that both my front and back are due to change. Countdown showing another 5K more then. Was quoted $800 for front and $800 for rear. Includes both brakes and rotor. Is the price reasonable?

Anyone can advise or can advise a more value for money option?

if we already change to aftermarket rotors + brake pads (mix-n-match), what is the "indicator" is time to change ?
as ABD said, each time send car for service, the shop will say ... ehh ... your brake rotor or pad "seems" need to change liao !

Are your rotors slotted? If they are, when the slots are disappearing, it may be about where the minimum thickness required is. Nevertheless, the most accurate indicator is to measure the thickness and make sure it is still within the manufacturers recommended specifications.

cool carbon pads with OEM caliper ? got click-clack sound or not ? :D

With OEM calipers and aftermarket rotors. No click-clack sound yet leh but it is starting to squeal a little. Are they like that?

Have not really tried the brake force yet as I've only travelled 150kms on them.

Many workshops in Singapore sucks!!!!!

Need to be careful who you go to.

Im not sure what kind of hand brake mechanism ur car uses. But for the sake of gaining 10 pts, I need to kaypoh abit....

Some car's hand brake are actually drum brakes.

The tension may be tightened by adjusting the springs, after removing the rear rotors at the
wheel hub; or adjusting the handbrake cable behind the handbrake lever.

These type of hand brake is independent from the "rotor + pad" system.

i am driving e93. i also not very sure why. i just did servicing they never carrot me by asking me to change brake pads. Haizzz....... also heng la, no need to waste $$$$

how about resurfacing the rotors?

that will be the budget way to have a brand new surface rotors and change a brand new set of pads.

I feel t workshop that tells you this is not wrong as the new pads are flat while your rotors are kinda wavey after some time of usage. so in layman terms, wavey rotors can grip a flat pads well, agree? so skimming will make the rotors flatter to match the flat pads to have a better braking effect, Its just my feel.. =P

Re: How often does the rotor require replacement?

Brake pads (stocks or after market/oem) = averagely wear out & need replacement +- 40 000KM usage.
Rotor (stocks) = averagely wear out & need replacement +- 100 000KM usage.

Of cos, easier way to judge/tell when rotors needs replacement is by using yur finger & runs thru e edge of e rotors (ps: do it when its cold) If u didnt feel e edge poping out, means still good.

Just to note:

Slotted & cross drills rotors will makan yur pads faster than usual thus above write out may not b applicable.
Metallic compound type of brake pads will makan yur rotors faster than usual too! thus above writh out may not b applicable as well.

My 2 cent

Re: How often does the rotor require replacement?

Sorry to bring back an old topic.

For BMW's, there is an indicator that shows our brake pads have been worn out when the brake pads had been worn down to the sensor being exposed and rubbed (that's why new sensor need to be replaced when new brake pad has been replace). However, seems that there are no sensors for brake disc rotor that can be indicated on whether if our brake disc rotors have been worn and require to be changed.

Recently, my brakes are making squeaky sounds when I'm braking, especially when braking at slow speed. Is this a form of indication that the brake disc rotor has been worn down and need to be changed?

There is an "need to replace" mark on the rotor itself. If it start to squeak now, it mean that brake pad is need to be replaced.

On stock pad, u need to replace rotor after 2 pad (roughly). Juz run ur finger through the rotor, if it is smooth, no need change.

Thank you for your advise. In actual fact, I just replaced my brake pads several months ago. The mechanic did say that my rotors is running a little thin, but can still last for a while, when he was replacing the brake pads.

Just recently (past two weeks), I've been hearing the squeaking sound when I brake, so I'm assuming that the rotors have reached its limit.

I'll check on the rotors for "need to replace" mark. However, how to identify the mark?

Go google, 'brake squeal'. Lots of discussions on subject.

I replaced performance pads (F+R), no change in rotor..... 1st mth no problem. 2nd mth, it started squealing..... :helpp!:

Did a few things then squeal reduces by 90%.

My experience is pads not bedded properly (especially high performance metallic/ceramic compound pads) and contact areas between pad and caliper assy not properly grease.

If none of the parts worn, squealing might be 50% insufficient bedding, 50% insufficient greasing (and anti-squeal compound).

Re: How often does the rotor require replacement?

can't say about other parts...

But if you are using original BMW parts, 95% brake pads and brake disc needs to be changed together.

check this out with BMW specialist workshop or surf the net on BMW forum in other countries...

Every says they same thing...

the brakes doesn't last very long also... usually you need to have it looked at around 35,000 km....
