Hi hi

what is the best and $$$ economical way to improve the wifi signal to my room?

I know very very little about computer stuff so went down to challenger store. The sales guy tell me there are many ways like repeater, power line and ........but cannot tell me which is the advise method. His reply "it depends on your apartment layout and each method has its good and bad so depend on you."

Re: How to impove hall wifi signal to room

The sales guy is right - it does depend somewhat on the layout of your place.

Just my own opinion - but the repeater works best for me. A decent set from D-Link cost about S$70 plus and works fine.

Cheers!

If your router is more than 2 yr old, best to throw it away. It is likely to be the culprit.

My home is 120 sq m. No issue using D-Link AC1750

Re: How to impove hall wifi signal to room

hack the wall away. to save money do it urself or ask ur friends to come. make sure they bring their own hammer.

Re: How to impove hall wifi signal to room

what type of router do you have and how the setup is connected? it is usually not the router if it is old..... what i have done is to use the device..... Aztech homeplug... good and effective transmission over power line at home.

if you need more details, do drop me a note.

run a wired trunking line if there is no way for your wifi signal to be broadcasted unblocked. Cost $150

Re: How to impove hall wifi signal to room

1. get bigger antennae to replace existing router's (hard to find)
2. flash your router - up the transmit power (but phone ipad laptop may not have the same transmit power)
3. buy another access point and put it nearer to blind spots (operating in repeater mode has a high bandwidth overhead - 50%)
4. relocate existing router by measuring noise and dbm losses
5. drop a lan line to do item 3. (need trunking and hacking maybe)
6. do a scan of the area for signals
- enable signal isolation & pseudo guard bands (may interfere in wireless printing)
- manually select a wider frequency band and select a specific channel not used by your neighbors
7. switch to a lower frequency (2.4ghz if its a distance issue or 5ghz if its an interference issue e.g microwave)

have fun !

Lay cables is always the best.

Just to add on, using repeater means ur speed drop by half. Using home plug may not work if u live in a big house with diff circuit for diff floor.

Do you mean :
1) One cable line in, one modem feeding 2 access points ? or
2) One cable line in, two modems with access points ?

Can download Wifi Manager app in google playstore to scan the frequency channel used by your neighbours.

As for wifi signal strength, you could try search for Wifi Signal Strength app in playstore. The app from Lakshman has pretty good review.

Wow. I did not know there is speed drop using repeater then it is not the suitable solution. Thank you for the info.

Laying cable and hacking down walls also not feasible.

So I will go home plug. Put 1 in hall and the other in my room. Seems like no disadvantages.
Can I just confirm that I will get the same speed as in the hall?
Any good home plug to recommend?

Re: How to impove hall wifi signal to room

I am now on the Aztech brand and was recommended by a colleague/friend. If you are staying in a HDB typed housing as they will pull in the single phase supply to your unit and should not have any problems. otherwise having 3 phase of power supply incoming into your house will be tough.

I have 3 units now in my HDB unit and the wireless strength is commendable..... Aztech HL119EP (2 pieces) and HL113EW (1 piece). Setup is as easy as ABC..... the best thing is that you can still use your existing wireless setup.

By the way, I am no salesman or any relation to Aztech, helping out sharing my setup.

Re: How to impove hall wifi signal to room

I, on the other hand, had bad experiences with Aztech. Now using a D-Link repeator and works fine.

Re: How to impove hall wifi signal to room

Aztech is not known for performance etc .... the concept is fine but use another brand.

Re: How to impove hall wifi signal to room

I have had issues with Aztech too. In fact, just changed to D-link this week. Seems fine but too early to tell...

Re: How to impove hall wifi signal to room

Hi hi

Thank you for all the advises. Now happy already. This morning I went to challenger and was deciding between tp link and d link both selling at $85. (Did not consider Aztech at all as being advised by kind bros here). Both is 500 speed and the wifi in my room is 300 speed (dont know the unit of measurement). Brought thd tp link as the packaging looks nicer.
went home read the instruction and really easy. Actually no setting at all. Just connect the cable provided into hall router and plug into power socket and i can get internet from my room using the other adapter through another cable provided. Took my phone open wifi select the tp link xxxxxx and key in password written on the plug and i get wifi immediately too. Really easy. Great stuff.
now i get wifi speed of about 30 mbps both in hall and room. Very happy. Before using plug i get 2mbps in my room.

Re: How to impove hall wifi signal to room

good to know of several options. The Aztech was a "freebie" to me and had not problems since day 1 (has been more than 6 months already). If this kaput on me, i have options now. Thanks again.

Re: How to impove hall wifi signal to room

According to salesman Aztech is the high-end brand vs tp link or d link which explain its price of $120 vs $85 for the to link.
I guess the quality we face is a matter of luck.

Bro. Thank you for your help.

Now I am using my room WiFi as a different name and I hear from my friend that it is possible to change it to the same wifiname as my hall so I don't have to manually switchable
Now goggle how to do it.

Cheers.
