Hi guys,

with only 1 power socket inside the armrest for E90...how do u guys power up your gps such as garmin nuvi?

I need to install the gps asap as I am encouraging my home minister to start driving again and she is 110% hopeless wif direction....

I have seen 1 bro here modifiying his e46 to power up directly (like our ERP IU) ..where can I get this done and how much?

thanks,

cheers.

Re: How to power your GPS?

Buy an extra female socket first if you don't wanna cut your charging cable. Get a workshop to help connect this in series with the current socket from the inside. Now you hide the connectors as well as all the wirings like your IU.

Re: How to power your GPS?

Btw, I did mine at BVO but felt it was qte ex. Car audio shop should cost much less.

Re: How to power your GPS?

dont be lazy

plug it in, then remove when ur going out - the wires on the nuvi are long enough!

Re: How to power your GPS?

Get Pin Liang to do the job for u. They are good at this. Shd be $50 including parts and labour.

Re: How to power your GPS?

Pin Liang is at Zion Rd. Juz google for their address bro. I paid $60 for install on my e90. It is quite a bit of work plus the spare socket that they throw in. Well worth it.

Re: How to power your GPS?

My nuvi is on the right hand side and my car socket in centre, mess of wires, so I'm using it wireless.

Re: How to power your GPS?

I also have my GPS on right hand side and it's really messy with wire, even if I have it middle of windscreen. I went to buy a power socket adaptor to USB connector and charge unit at night. Daytime usage is "wireless".

Re: How to power your GPS?

Wah.. so expensive.

I bought the female socket at SGD1.60 and installed in JB for RM10 (inclusive of a relay).

When I press my Engine ON, Nuvi comes to life. When I press Engine OFF, Nuvi goes to sleep in 30 secs.

I have mine right in the middle of the dashboard. No messy wires.

Re: How to power your GPS?

Have the same problem. On my E90, the only charger is in the compartment behind the handbrake. If I plug in the charger, I can't close the compartment cover. Plus the wires are very ugly.

So I usually end up charging the unit at home ( got a Cigarette Lighter-to-wall-socket converter ) and using the Garmin unit wirelessly.

Only downside is that you gota moniter the battery level and make sure you charge it regularly. (Wife normally kun cheong and charges it very very religiously ). I dont usually keep the GPS in the car anyway so its not too much of a hassle for me.

Considered getting Pin Liang or some other shop to do some wiring for me.. but scared that end up getting a squeaky dashboard etc..

Using a Garmin Nuvi 310 btw. It rocks, esp the text to speech function!

Re: How to power your GPS?

Just some personal advice..

Dun use the original supplied supply cable for your GPS. Go to Sim Lim and purchase a mini USB charging adapter for handphones. They are quite standard as they are all required to provide 5V of power. However make sure that it supplies in excess of 800mA. Get a shop to help you wire it into your car under the dash. That way, when you travel, you can just remove the the GPS unit and mount and pack it up together with the supplied power cable. This method IMHO saves you the most. original value of the unit is preserved, ease of usage (auto switch off), long lasting (no need to rely on battery power), neat and original power socket still available to charge HP, light cigarette.....

Hope this helps.
