iDrive Hidden Menu & Chipping

Re: iDrive Hidden Menu & Chipping

As far as i know, there is a lot of difference between the 523 and the 525 or 323 and 325.

I am not 100 percent sure but i was told that that the throttle body, manifold, software version of the ECU and the EGS are all different. It's not just a matter of just downloading the 2.5L map and u get 40hp straightaway. A lot of software and hardware needs to be replaced.

Just like the E46 323i and 325i, the engine block may look the same but the manifold, cam, valve, crankshaft and a lot of other things are all different.

I've researched this issue intensely for the E60, but found only anecdotal evidence regarding the difference between the 523 and 525 - though i'm sure its much more than just software. can anyone point out the actual differences?

I spoke to someone in the know within PML. I was told that PML has tried to find out the actual differences from BMW but Germany remains very tight-lipped. That person suspects that it could just be software and not substantial hardware differences.

Re: iDrive Hidden Menu & Chipping

If you check the part numbers at www.realoem.com you will see that they are the same for 523 and 525. In fact the part number for a complete engine is the same! The only difference I could find was the MSV70 Programable Unit or something like that (I just went back to realoem but this part is no longer listed, just the basic control unit which is the same for both). I would love to borrow/buy a 525 ECU to try on a 523 to see if it works!

Re: iDrive Hidden Menu & Chipping

The engine block has to be the same cos both are 2.5L.

If u do a check carefully, the Intake manifold is different together with the engine mapping and software.

Even the brakes r different. The 523 is having a 310 x 24mm wheras the 525 is having a 325 x 30mm brakes.

If u pluck a 525 software from another car and put into the 523, it will not work. The new DME will fail to communicate with the car cos the immobilizer will shut it out.

Re: iDrive Hidden Menu & Chipping

A 523 was loaded with 525 map before in Singapore but it didn't work out as plan. No gains. The differences is more than just software.

Re: iDrive Hidden Menu & Chipping

According to the part numbers in realoem the crankshafts, intake manifold, pistons, etc are all the same. I have been told that realoem is accurate as I had posted something along these lines in E60.net but no one knew for sure what the difference was. It was all speculation.

Apparently Rob(DMS) is having trouble doing something for the 523. The last I heard 2 days ago he was still working on it and it "was proving more difficult than expected".

Re: iDrive Hidden Menu & Chipping

I think BMW have the same security features as MB.

After you upload a software, be it new, or upgrade, the technician has to email the manufacturer with the serial number of the engine, and ecu. Then the factory will send a password for the tech to put into the car.

If car model different from software model, they don't work.

I suspect that's why the when the 525 sw didn't work when uploaded into the 523

Re: iDrive Hidden Menu & Chipping

so there is hope.... that a 523 might be a 525 in disguise ? makes sense from an economic point of view.

even the brake upgrade looks promising, if not for the sticky warranty issue with PML.

I dun think so, the block may be very well the same, but just like wat piggy sed, every other part is diff, i heard of a 523 tryin to get 525 gains.. but somehow something went wrong.. software wise the 523 did not compute. I seriously think it'll never happen but boy... if there is somehting possible then it'll something to look forward to.

Here's something from E60 on how to get the secret menu
1. Press down the knob for a few seconds (like 6 or 10), release.
2. Turn knob clock-wise 3 clicks
3. Turn knob anti-clockwise 3 clicks
4. Turn knob clock-wise 1 click
5. Turn knob anti-clockwise 1 click
6. Turn knob clock-wise 1 click
7. Press the knob down briefly

It may not work on idrives with NAV
