Increasing Fuel Effiency

Guys, having the E46 preface lift 1.9l

Any advise on what to install to increase the economy? Bringing the car in for servicing next week.

During the meet-up, a friend was kind to get into the system and it stated comsumption at 9l/100km

But don't think so leh. Guessing doing about 8km/litre or 12.2l/100km

I was doing 12km/l with my other 2litre Peujeot.

Does the different octane, 92 / 95/ 98 affect the mileage? Full tank, how much can it go? Mine does 460km then light up. Normal?

Thanks!!

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

Jerry,

Sounds like it's quite normal. My ex e46 also performed like that. Not to mentioned i got a heavy foot.

Fuel economy can be achieved by a few ways..

Here is what i did.
1. Reduce weight of car, removed everything in my boot etc.
2. Use a better air filter system (K&N panel filter, NOT cone.)
3. Check and pump higher tyre pressure every 2 months.
4. Attempt to drive better.

Didn't use those fuel magnets etc, some suggest that broquet fuel system works well..but at it's cost..will probably take some time to even out the $$$.

That's from me at the moment...

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

Downsize to 15" rims is another possibility, me think.

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

Any comments on using 95 octane for new beemers? I always hear people saying that all cars can use 95 Octane but never seen any comparison or recommendations.

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

95 shud work just fine i think
after all, it's the min requirement from the factory

I used to drive the prefacelift. It does between 7.6 - 8.0km/l with 80% city driving. Always been using 92 cuz the gas cover says min 91. *cheapo.

KNN drop-in air filter is the only mod I had. My old ride used to run on 19" but I had it reduced to 17" to get only slightly better FC. So T6 is probably rite, but 15" on a beemer?

Besides Ryan's pointers, try driving a different route that gives you more highway than lights to get that additional mileage for $ (then again this is if you manage to avoid the ERPs..)

I ve read on this site the possibilities of getting better FC with a change of plugs, better engine oil, air intakes, pulley systems etc but I dont know if they're gonna give you real savings. It's probably for better reasons than jus shrinkin the gas bills. Maybe the ol'birds can shed some light...

good one bro. I was about to suggest this. anyway, this car used to come with 15" stock rims.

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

The best option is turn off the air-con.....

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

dont fill full tank every time u pump petrol, just fill half tank. save 30 kg in sprung weight......

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

Thanks guys for your advise.

Actually just moved from stock 15" to 18".....hhmnn....... but looks so much nicer.

However the steering feels much lighter compared to the stock 15" rims.

Anyway, guess will change the air filter to K&N as advised.

Probably due to tyre pressure, types of rims and tyres. Otherwise, all things being equal, steering shd feel heavier as more tyre contact with the road when u upsize to 18".

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

Put a brick under the accelerator pedal, just high enough to allow about ~3cm of depression of the pedal before it hits the brick. FC confirm improve. :)

be careful with KNN air filter. over oiling can cause problems. and its also definitely going to get your engine dirtier than the stock filter.

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

try hurricane filter instead of KNN.. the former doesn't need oiling to trap particles!!!

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

Is there any diff between hurricane and K&N?

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

Hurricane mesh are fully stainless steel without any other media. K&N still have a layer of fibery stuff. That's what I have observed.

Thks jawzsg for the info

However, alot of people has commented that stainless steel filters cannot trap dirt efficiently. You may get better HP and FC but engine might get dirty more quickly.

Re: Increasing Fuel Effiency

How about changing to better spark plugs such as Volky racing plugs which some bros mentioned here?
Does it improve FC? Anyone? pls share.

I am doing 9.2km/l on my E46 318. Some bros here get better FC leh.
I have KNN filter and cyclone fitted. Dun think the cyclone did much help.
