Re: Install Turbo Charger for E46
I haven't check forum for some time and nice to know someone is actually doing FI on a beemer locally. For some time I have done lots of readup on TC and was figuring how to do it on my E36 4 ports. Doesn't seem to be able to get a 4 - 1 exhaust manifold except go the customed route.
Some of the points brought up are valid especially RHD. The steering column is about 2 inches away from the exhaust and that can be tricky to try and squeeze in a high temperature piece. My compression is 9.5:1 and pre-detonation would have been a problem if exceed 0.5 bar especially in our hot ambience temperature. You seriously need to beef up all cooling options.
Some other consideration is engine life span, expecting to wear down quite fast if maintenance is not up to par. Buy barrel of engine oil and change them every 2000 - 3000 clicks if you track. If you are on 4 port, your exhaust configuration would have been 4:2:1. Converting to TC requires a 4:1 which will sacrify some low end torque.
More air also means more fuel and fuel pump and injectors must be matching. Lastly, you will need a piggyback of sort to overide the stock air-fuel ratio and timing - re-map. The final bock down factor for my project is - LTA... their conditions is simply impossible despite submitting detailed plans and specs. It's gonna be costly to run and maintain with the risk of having your car compounded.
Maybe I really don't know enough about TC that's why I have my apprehension. Kindly keep us updated on progress.
