Intercooler for your BMW 335 TT?

Re: Intercooler for your BMW 335 TT?

Some people believe that if they fit a very big intercooler with large ducts, the volume of charge air within it will unduly slow throttle response. Their concern is unjustified however - throttle response problems (for example, turbo lag) are largely the result of other factors within the forced induction system, not the volume of air within it.
Skim read, so probably missed other things, but this statement really stood out as completely false. Volumes matter very much, coming right after how well the turbo is matched to the engine. If the kit you've bought has been well developed and/or tested, or if you've done your own research properly and bought your own turbo, then the turbo match WILL be in the ballpart and volumes will be your next concern in minimizing lag. Exhaust valve to turbine inlet volumes, compressor outlet till intake valve volumes, and volume from throttle blade to intake valve.

Different applications will place different emphasis on minimizing lag. Applications like autocross and technical rally will demand least lag (at the expense of system (flow and thermal) efficiency), whereas high speed cruise like offshore powerboats or Bonneville record setters will place near complete emphasis on system efficiency (at the expense of increased lag). Big open courses like Mosport, La Sarthe, Monza, etc. will favour flow efficiency because there is usually a lot more than 70% of time spent at WOT or at least large throttle openings. Also the sorts of corners you have to pull from and the gearing gaps (engine throughput (volume) at resumption of throttle increase reference to earlier mentioned system volumes).

This is the reason why you see such big differences in turbo systems depending on application. One of the best ways to learn about all above is to study current turbocharged WRC and LMP cars, as well as past 80s turbo F1 stuff, but always in light of regulations since that modifies conclusions somewhat. Race winning road race, drag race, offshore powerboat, land speed record turbo systems also are good to learn from. Just about everything else that is contrary to these systems you know is false, unworkable, or impractical.

PerverTT again makes a good point about IC mounting. Dedicated ducting (both pre and post core) really helps more than any of the things that people usually argue about (core type and orientation, end tank design), provided they are in the ballpark and provided you have enough space in the bay to the heat exchangers around and run proper ducts. Things like V-mounting the radiator and the IC, etc.

i've never looked at intercoolers as a way to more power, surely. The only guy who really IC for more power is Kleeman, and that's for superchargers. If you want more power you gotta install water sprays on the IC like some of our evo friends ... then you got 25. Otherwise perhaps only 10, which is nothing ... just 2 percent increase for you huh?

Slightly off-topic but I've never seen any hard data or dyno graph that shows the intercooler spray making any significant difference on Evos on full power. Hell the stock ECU programming pretty much ensures it doesn't come on even during auto mode, if ever. May exist for homologation purposes.

As a general rule of thumb a 10 deg drop in intake air temperature nets about 2.5% more air density at sea level.

Option 2, i'd get a bolt on one. Spearco and RD Sport AFAIK is 100% bolt on. Active Autowerke ones require cutting on some ends to fit so its a lil more work. Spearco seems to have proven itself quite good with alot of ppl. RDSport was is basically a RPI(Race Precision) one rebranded.

i am getting the rd sport intercooler.good for 10whp and better heat sink for tropical weather.

Dont laugh leh. I support Star Wars one u know.

At least our Ho Varder is dead serious about what he wants to do. I am already mentally preparing myself to be poked by his light sabre someday very soon.

i am R&D engineer by training.of course do already.
this rd sport intercooler very similar to rpi ones.

one guy in e90.post did the rpi intercooler.dyno with 10whp gains.
they are taller than oem ones so maybe need a m-sport bumper's deeper ventral vent to utilise
it.

getting them from wilson.

The Dinan High Capacity Oil Cooler provides literally twice the volume of the stock unit, as well as 414 sq./in. of cooling tube vs. 112.5, and that’s really just the beginning. Nicely integrated inlet ducting provides greater airflow efficiencies and the ventilation of air to the fender well has also been improved with a larger outlet. The system mounts neatly in the stock location and includes lightweight convoluted PTFE hoses with polyester outer braid fitted with race-quality fittings. For cars that were not equipped with the factory oil cooler, kits are available that include all of the additional parts necessary for the installation.

The results of the oil cooler upgrade are quite significant, with the temperature gauge holding steady even under high load/high boost scenarios. And for those of you who track their cars, even occasionally, the Dinan oil cooler is a must.

Specifications

Total Volume: Stock = 9.5 oz. / Dinan = 19 oz.
Surface Area: Stock = 45 sq./in. / Dinan = 67.5 sq./in.
Cooling Tubes: Stock = 10 / Dinan = 23
Tube Lengths: Stock = 90 in. / Dinan = 207 in.
Tube Area: Stock = 112.5 sq./in. / Dinan = 414 sq./in.

Swee Swee!! Can track with peace of mind liao.....

Driving at 200km/h on NSH in the nite is actually very cooling!!

Ah Ho wanna track in Sepang, that's different if one wanna push the car harder than Sunday cruzing....

Alot of ppl keep wanting more & more power but neglect on cooling mods.......

Re: Intercooler for your BMW 335 TT?

steady lah... trust wilson to get stuff like this.. should re-name him the poison doctor.....

anyway, for trackies, The oil cooler is a must, the 335 engine uses oil spray to cool the undersides of the pistons. As such the oil gets pretty hot. And hot oil does not last long....

Cheers
