Following up on will's comments and links on the iOS 4.0 on iPhone 3G...
It sux (Will - I was wrong ). The issue as I see it is that the OS launches some processes and never shuts them down (Safari, Mail etc.). Even the usual memoryinfo app which I use wasnt able to close these. As a result, the phone works nicely post a restart but in about 4-5 hours - it is DEAD slow.
To get optimal performance from your 3G, stick to OS 3.1.x.
If you have gone ahead (i.e. impatient like me) and have turned your iPhone into a tortoise toy, follow this step-by-step I put together to get it back to 3.1.x and enjoy your iPhone again.
Here's the link.
