If we buy the iPhone from US, do we need to downgrade the software to accommodate the system here? Then what is unlock and lock for the iPhone??

Easy easy..

Locked = can used with official released countries' operators only.

Unlocked = 100% works with any operators in any countries.

Only few countries operators providing official unlock, but of coz extra charges apply. Optus from Australia providing official unlock for AUSD$80. So my recommendation is, buy an locked iPhone 3G and get rebel sim card or hypersim/turbosim/or whatsoever name that is in market right now. Rebel sim card must attached with your current sim card to work on an Apple iPhone 3G. Whenever your put in your sim card, must attach it with rebel sim card, rebel will by-pass the lock system in iPhone.
