my z also does not work with the ipod cable... but i got pml to install an aux jackconnector in the glove box... works fine now... low tech but effective! :)

Geoff,

Can you select the iPod as an input source from the BMW head unit, just like how you would select the CD or radio?

Also, song selection is still done thru the iPod right, not thru the head unit?

Re: iPod

yes... u hit the mode button on ya bmw set till u get AUX and control the track etc from the ipod... :)

Re: iPod

Feel like getting the dension as it charges the ipod and let you select the songs from the radio. But the cost is just crazy! US$199

O great! how much does PML charge for this aux cable installation? This is a standard offering by PML right, so I can just speak to any of the CSAs there?

Can take a look at your setup?

Re: iPod

just changed my head unit to an alpine.
actually it doesn't cost that much to be ipod ready.
depending on your budget, get a decent ipod ready head unit and throw in an adaptor.
the adaptor only cost me 170 bucks which allows selection from the head unit.
the only thing sucks is that if u get the usual alpine head units like me, u can't see the songs that are in chinese.
overall damage for me was 450 for the alpine head unit, 170 for the adaptor, 680 for my ipod 60gb photo

Yes, guess if the HU is changed, then a lot of problems are solved. Trouble is, I'm unwilling to change the HU becos still prefer the HU to blend with the dash. O well.....

Geoff, I found out that my original HU doesn't have an aux input. apparently the e46 HU is different from the Z4's. That comes with an aux input. Anyway, thanks for the offer. I'll look for u if i can make the next meetup.

cheers

Right on! That's the way to go. Alpine themselves told me that its also a very good way to get good sound out of MP3s. Somehow if you just connect aux-in to a standard system, it comes out sounding quite.. not so good.

One drawback is that once you connect the ipod function to HU, your HU treats it as a changer. Thus you cannot control changer anymore, unless you add in another interface that allows multiple changer control. Right now that's the only thing holding me back from iPodding my ICE.

Re: iPod

the alpine HU actually allows u to choose., could actually select between ipod, disc changer and etc. so its not that restrictive after all.
the only cons is that my display can only show those songs in english not those in chinese unless maybe i get one of those alpine touch screen lcds kinda HU. but nah, my E36 only got abt 5.5 yrs left so i dun bother. just get a decent alpine ipodready HU for the time being.

Sounds like the Alpine solution is pretty good, despite the inability to display chinese characters. never mind, not bad already. Just curious, how does it display the chinese characters now? Like alien code??!? Actually if it displays properly also very alien to me becos my mandarin not so good. Heh.

I suppose you can bring yr HU over to a new car. Still, it's another new investment especially since u just got the HU.

Re: iPod

i'm quite ok with the alpine hu i got for my e36. sure beats having a changer cos of the storage capacity. i bought the ipod 60gb photo the following day after i got the HU. now i'm just trying to find time to convert my few hundred cds into mp3s into my ipod....haha.

Re: iPod

i'm planning to get another car, MR2 or silvia.....i like weird cars, not like your usual fare of rexs, evos. the e36 is a comfy ride with some speed to boot. anyway, i do worry cos so used to driving european cars, my brain is now wired towards left handed signalling...try imagining the wiper coming up when i drive a jap car

Thanks,

got myself a cda 9847
ipod ready only means the HU ready to accept ipod but u still need to buy the adaptor.
depending on your budget, u can choose your HU starting from 450 and the ipod adaptor cost abt 170. i got mine from 5 luck enterprise at bukit merah lane. service not bad, the old man boss quite frenly, went to fixed my reverse sensors there too last sat.
