Ipod

Re: Ipod

Hi Ex3,

I am good. Switched from an RX to the X3. Both cars are fun in a different way, but that's a different forum...

Re: Ipod

Cool.... you have a great taste and made a smart choice :) I switched from a Harrier :yummie:

Re: Ipod

Hi again,

Just took delivery of my new 523iA today! I must again thank you all for the contributions you have made but I am utterly confused now. iPOD interface, Denison, Harmon Kardon, etc. which one man! I guess Denison is out since it does not offer interface for current 5 series. Harmon Kardon needs a little DIY and may void iDrive warranty.

In order to maintain my warranty, I think I will go for the PML solution. Therefore, if there are anyone out there who have this option installed, do advice. Everytime I ask PML, the price seems to get higher; it was $400+ the first time I asked, then $500+ and now, its $600+. Better get it done quick or I may end up paying more than what the car cost :)

Re: Ipod

Huh you mean PML is offering an Ipod interface for iDrive for 5 series? must check it out....

Re: Ipod

Hi BZSAB,

When I asked PML about the IPod interface for my X3, I did not get a simple answer too; and it's not exactly cheap. I concluded that if they are not too sure with advising me with what to do, I am not worst off looking for 3rd party alternatives, and which I might add probably does a better job at interfacing than the BMW original.

My advise: Don't rush into it. Check around with some of the more reputable car audio shops (see I.C.E. section for referrals). See what's available, and make an informed decision for yourself based on your needs/expectations

Re: Ipod

call kampung arang. ask for anwar. 63190881 ... he is one of the more competent guys working there ... if there are more ... i apologise in advance as he is the only one i would leave my wheels with =)

Re: Ipod

I agree with SFB929P, don't rush into it. For the price of the BMW's iPod option, the OTHER options are far better in terms of integration and features.

I took a few months to research and decide what the final solution I want (the icelink plus) and where I want the iPod to be. During this temporary period, I used my old iTrip (sound quality is only "so so", but it'is extremely convenient), then later I got the AUX option... which will still be quite useful even after I install the icelink - my wife can still plug her iPod Shuffle when she is in the car!

Re: Ipod

Confirmed - IceLink does not work on BMWs with iDrive for now. A new kit is expected in Feb 2006.

Re: Ipod

Thanks for advices guys! I am now using my trusty iTrip and, guess what, it works better in the new 523 than the old Merc! I think I will take SFB929P ad ex3 advice to look around, at least till the new IceLink kit for iDrive is available next year.

Re: Ipod

Hi Guys!

Checked again and confirm that iPod interface for 523iA is not currently available. Expect availability sometime early next year. Guess will have to wait till then

Re: Ipod

Hi all,

I've just successfully installed the Icelink Plus myself this evening. Took about 1.5 hours to do. The job was pretty easy, and the most challenging part was to take out the center arm rest and console completely, in order to remove the CD Changer.

Great features: control ipod with the BMW's head unit / steering wheel controls; direct access to the first 5 playlsit, browse all Playlists, Artist, Album (a bit slow tho); use EITHER the iPod's click wheel OR head unit to control; Song Name for the playing track is DISPLAYED ON THE BMW'S HEAD UNIT (English only)!!!

Sound quality is much better than the AUX INPUT option (plugged via headphone out on the iPod).

Cons: response is a bit slow; locks up the iPod's control completely when used with the head unit's control

Re: Ipod

Have you upgraded your icelink plus with the latest firmware? I know the previous ones the navigation is very lagging, but the latest one is pretty responsive to me.

Re: Ipod

No, I was hoping it already has the latest. At the start up screen, it says V22.B2. It's that the latest?

Which version is on yours?

Re: Ipod

ex3,

Just curious! What model beemer do you drive? Will be extremely interested if it is the new 5 series with iDrive.

Re: Ipod

The icelink is installed in the X3 (no iDrive). I heard the new one should be released some time around Feb which will be compatible with iDrive.

Re: Ipod

ex3,

Thanks! That is what I was told. Will have to wait till early next year.

Re: Ipod

When I upgraded from e46 to e90, I searched high and low for a cable to connect the nano to the aux input that was less than 1.8m long! I finally located one in a store about 5 doors down from the Apple Store in Funan - they specialise in cables only. The stock on display is 2m, but behind the counter, they have one which is about 15cm and perfect for keeping inside the armrest without taking up the whole thing with a coiled up cord! six bucks.

I'm not an audiophile so sound quality is fine... the only problem is you have to remember to open up the armrest and turn the thing off when you stop, else it will keep on going til the battery runs out.

As an aside, I used a cassette adaptor in my e46, which was pretty ok (much better than the fm transmitters) and allowed some level of control of the ipod from steering wheel. If anyone wants to inherit it, let me know.

Re: Ipod
