Is this idling speed normal?

I have 2 problem with my car recently. Its Due for Inspection 2 in another 900km time.

Firstly, the i wonder if the idling speed is normal. I realise just now while waiting for my brother in the car, Idling speed with aircon off and gear in P is higher then when its on. Engine is very quiet and no vibrations at all unlike when the gear when its in D. ( 1st pic a/c off, 2nd a/c on)

Second problem is that the bulb indicator keeps coming on and off showing that the rear right bulb faulty. I did a quick check with the connection and tighten all bulbs and find no problems but the indicator still flashes up intermittantly. Anyone have met with this problem?

Re: Is this idling speed normal?

1500rpm is not normal... with air-con on should bring rpm down by about 100...

w/o air-con = 700-800rpm
w/ air-con = 800-900rpm

get it checked soon. your petrol consumption would have significantly increased...

Re: Is this idling speed normal?

1500rpm idling (assume this is when warm), is not normal.
Think you should go get it checked!

I just realised that the valvetronic engine redline is 6,500? And the marker is in white? :)

Re: Is this idling speed normal?

With regards to the idling speed, i think you've got a sticky idle valve if you've got a 6cyl. i got 4 cyl valvetronic then i think need to bring the car in to check.

For the bulb problem, i faced the problem too. Changed the brake bulb due to some corrosion IN the bulb itself. The E46 uses single filament bulbs for all the lamps and when the head lights are on, an electronic board in under the dash limits the voltage to the bulbs and so they glow dimly. When you step on the brakes, it allows the full voltage through. This creates some heat in the filament holders inside the bulb and causes some corrosion. When they corrode, their resistance changes and the system registers it as a failed bulb.

Remove those bulbs and check out the filiment posts at the ends of the filament. You should see a rough surface. Just replace those bulbs with those you get at Sin Ming or even at petrol stations. (12v / 21w type) That should solve the prob.

Cheers

Re: Is this idling speed normal?

1500RPM for idling is NOT normal.... Get it checked.

As for bulb, i think it's the connector. Very common problem for E46. It's the connector side, not the bulb holder side. Check the earth wire (normally this wire is the culprit) which is brown colour. U will see the connector get burned out. If u r a DIY person, buy the connector, and the 7 wires, cut them off one by one and replace the connector. Both side of my car replaced liao...

Took me 3 months to fault find hurhurhur.....

Re: Is this idling speed normal?

Alan, my car kenna the bulb problem too.. Connector was fine but bulb was screwed.. Heard of the connector problem too, its a common e46 problem...

Ha ha.. pay so much for a german premium car and we got to sort out this kinds of problems...
